I received the wrong book (the Self-Assessment and Board Review). I suspect the situation may be the same for other buyers. If so, sorry for the hassle.

Fortunately, Abe Books has a 30-day returns policy.

Unfortunately, they only refund return shipping equal to the original charge (i.e. US$24.99).

If you search the original link on Google, and view the cached version, you can see that the ISBN listed is that of the proper Harrison's.

Anyway, I received an email from the seller saying that there is no need to return the book; I will still receive the refund. Thank goodness for good customer service.

Seller notes:
Brand New. Original International Edition. ISBN & Cover of the book might be different. Contents are similar to US Editions. Printed in English.

At first, I thought this was a pricing error, since Harrison's is usually $200+. But I put my order through, and I just received a confirmation email that my order has been shipped. I hope this book is actually Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, and not another Harrison's title.

Confirmed soft-cover, printed B&W on glossy paper.

If you want the "real" copy for a cheap price, just get it from Borders and use the Borders Price Match Guarantee, where they will refund the difference plus 10% compared to Amazon.com's price. A friend told me this trick.

  • Great find but I am too old to read this novel again :). It used to cost me an arm and a leg and I still have my 12th Edition. They come in CD ROM and I have found uptodate is easier to read with great search function. However, Harrison is still the bibble for you med med people.

  • Looks like some nice bedtime reading :)

has anyone bought from this place before? reputable store?

    • Can't comment on the seller of this particular book (they have a five-star seller rating though), but Abe Books is definitely reputable (been on the web since 1996) and is now owned by Amazon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AbeBooks

    • Yep, I was looking for an obscure, 30-year-old Airfix "Classic Aircraft" title in 2007 and found a copy from a bookseller in Germany via AbeBooks.

  • seems like it's been 17th for yonks. any idea when 18 will come out?

  • normally download the e-book version for free :)

  • What's the print quality of the International Edition?

  • +1

Booko has spotted this special and it's streets ahead of everyone else, other than Amazon US:

  • I have no need for book, not doing medicine. So I suppose there would be not much of interest in it to the layman. (or would there like anatomy books containing lots of pictures?)

  • Haven't been in med school for years now, but definitely a + from me for all the medkids who need it.

If your a doctor, what need do you have for hunting bargains?

      • -2

because ppl keep asking to be bulk billed thats why

        • yep… sure.

        • +2

i guess you didn't get the joke?

        • -2

Yep, get the joke but even if you bulk bill still a good wage by most people's standards. Too many greedy gp's out there.

        • +1

If you think the Medicare Schedule Fee (which has never kept up with inflation) is a fair wage for a doctor then you've never really thought about their expenses (like continuing education, supplies and insurance). It's plainly ignorant and insulting to call most GPs greedy.

But this isn't the place for that conversation.

        • +2

I know numerous gps that make a perfectly good living on the schedule fee only. As for education expenses, the gps I know are set up in 5 star hotels, all expenses paid including travel for educational conferences a couple times a year, and at the same time get a whole bunch of freebies from the drug companies.

Also, read my post properly, I said too many not most gps.

But I agree with you, I can see how some gps may be insulted if they perceive a threat to their income — in contrast to their livelihood.

Having many family members / friends who are doctors in australia as well as other countries, what i have noticed is Australian docs make a killing compared to docs from a lot of other countries including England. And thats saying alot as docs in england do extremely well for themselves as it is. At the end of the day the career path should only be appealing for people who want to service and help others and make a alright / decent living out of it. But once you make it into a path where its a surefire way to make a great income you also inevitably invite the wrong kinds of people into what is a very important and unique role.

I am also talking about bulk billing / working in public hospital docs, the private sector makes even more of a killing.

  • Amazing deal. Although I agree that uptodate has superseded it in the workplace. Maybe a new edition is on the way

  • I used to buy many of my textbooks cheaply by getting the cheap international editions from overseas.

Often these editions are black and white only on poor quality paper and poorly bound, but if you just want the material for a course it is pretty cheap.

  • Agreed. I've had one or two international editions of my books as well. The cheapest international editions (often from India) can have a lower quality of paper stock and binding as well as just being in black and white even if the originals are in colour.

That being said, however, I also have a few international editions (UK and Singapore published) that was just as good as the US printings. In fact, I preferred my UK edition over the US editions of my classmates because it was marginally thinner so it was easier to pack. Even if it was thinner, the paper stock was still a joy to use and handle.

  • You can also get the 2 vol. set which includes a DVD (and isn't an international edition) for $100.14 (http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=3552140204&…) according to booko: http://www.booko.com.au/books/isbn/9780071476911 Although the seller rating on this one is only 2 stars…

  • Brilliant find! Gotta make sure everything is the way it is though (asking the seller questions) - it's too much of a hassle to return it if it's not what it is.

I got this code in my email - it may be customer specific but give it a go for an extra 10%!
