Considering to Switch from S8+ to Pixel or Mate 10

Hey guys,

Really just an open discussion here.

I have upgraded from a Nexus 5X to Galaxy S8+ about 2 months ago. So far the screen and performance of S8+ are phenomenal; not to mention the convenience of Adhell / Samsung's device management feature. However, unexpectedly the cameras on this phone are a huge let down. Colour of photos are always off, exposure is bad in auto mode and the loss of details under non-perfect lighting conditions are really creeping up to me. I have tried to use -2 exposure in Pro mode as some suggested. While it helps a bit it's getting really annoying (plus HDR doesn't work in Pro mode). My wife is using my old phone at the moment and the photos always come out better.

The whole thing is pretty ironic as I bought the S8+ expecting great cameras with shitty software and over-saturated display. Now it's almost the exact opposite.

I am seriously considering getting last year's Pixel XL (around $600) or the Mate 10 (around $700 and I will have to check out the LCD display first. Benchmarks show a rather poor screen contrast).

Just like to know everyone's thought.

Cheers,
Max

  • I went from a 5X to a Pixel 2 (Non-XL), and the camera has been phenomenal. the 5X Camera was actually very good too, the only things letting it down were slower autofocus and average low light performance (when written out those sound like a bigger deal than they were in reality).

Have you tried other camera apps on the Samsung? You can download and use the Google Camera app on the Play store (It's the app used on Nexus and Pixel devices) and use it rather than the Samsung app, or try some of the other apps.

    • S8's low light performance is even worse imo. The attempt of noise reduction kills off a lot of details. Mine is the Exyno version so Google Camera wouldn't work.

S8's low light performance is even worse imo.

No, it's not. Quite the opposite according to 99% of youtube and tech site reviewers.

Google Camera app now works on Exynos.

From the sound of the users' experience however it might not help anyway.

The following is pretty good comparison of photos, specifically in Low light, and the S8 is objectively a good camera, compared to other objectively very good cameras. Might need to manage your expectations a bit.

This article provides some more examples of the S8 in low light, and while the title suggests the V30 beats the S8, I actually prefer the latter's photos.

Do you have any example photos that demonstrate your complaints?

        • Have a look at this and my real life experience so far is about twice as bad. https://youtu.be/WbloTFz2LKY

I am not saying it's a bad camera; I mean it's definitely above average. However, comparing to iPhone and pixel it's definitely one step behind.

You are right that it doesn't match my expectations. All the hypes that I read online probably make me believe it's in the same class as the other two.

  • Lol…..

I totally disagree, because I think the S8's camera is phenomenal. Best there is. It has the best low light performance out of any smartphone camera so I have no idea what you're on about. Koreans like saturated photos, so you just have to use it. Remember, the cameras are better suited to what Koreans like.

    • I am not Korean nor do I need to understand what they like. Quite the opposite, Samsung is a global brand and S8 is their flagship product which means their product team needs to understand what the global consumers like. Btw the photos are NOT saturated. The only thing that is saturated is the screen.Google's camera has way better contrast.

I am not saying that you have to agree with me but please make constructive comments.

      • Feel free continue the discussion about the product but let's not get personal.
