Hi all
Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for my 5 year old (almost 6).
It needs to be less then $30-40 and as rugged as possible. I have no doubt it will last less then 6 months but hopefully he enjoys it before crashing it or losing it up a tree haha.
Any suggestions?
Would need to be able to be delivered before christmas..
Cheers
Best Drone for 5 Year Old

Thanks :)
If we take the definition of drone as unmanned vehicle. Then a UGV (unmanned ground vehicle), aka remote control car, may be a better fit for a 5-year-old here.
I had thought about a remote control car also, open to suggestions for those too. Again, needs to be rugged, not too fast and easy to use.
5 year old is not capable of controlling a quadcopter. Remote controlled car, maybe. Train set ? Hot-weels ? Carrera Race track ?
Scalextric! I loved that shit as a kid
I also loved scalextric - does such stuff even exist anymore! I remember adding extra magnets to the bottom of the cars to make them stick better….
This kid seems to be handling the drone ok…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_vEAwjK5t0
I got my 5 year old a quadcopter for about $20 and it lasted about a day. The same one that I gave my 8 year old lasted about 3 days. :)
the moral of the story is, get them playdoh instead, it does the same job, unmanned clay for about couple of seconds when you throw it up in the air plus learn about the practicality of theory of gravity ! :)
We have playdoh (who doesnt) and he has been using it sporadically since he was probably 2….magic sand is all the rage now!
I understand that it will break, thats why i want something cheap, but rugged if possible.
how do you find the magic sand? I never buy one (afraid of the mess at home), but he plays it at child care
Its pretty amazing stuff - you need to have a very wide/large shallow plastic container for it. Its expensive stuff if you get the good stuff.
I'll subscribe myself to this post, as I'd like to know too (mine is 3yo); I've been thinking to buy something like this, as the rotor has cage. but I think best to buy him a RC car instead…just in case that cage is flimsy…
I have so far looked at the below:
JJRC H36
Eachine E010 or E011
Furibee F36TBH all look very similar
these models don't have a cage for the blades, are you sure you are going to give it to 5 yo? (note, as I only have 3yo, not sure whether 5yo is mature enough and understand the danger of fast spinning blades); I guess better safe than sorry?
How about axis nano drone?
Maybe you should look into an RC car instead, since one crash at "relatively high speed" is all it takes to break the drones.
any suggestions? from experience, most cheapish rc cars are either very twitchy to drive, wayyyy too fast with no speed control, flimsy and just as likely to break as a drone, any also have poor battery life…
RC cars generally belong in two categories, one being a toy for kids (which are under $50 normally and you'll find easily on Gearbest / Toys 'r' Us) and second category are hobbyist RC cars which are for older people to play with, but cost quite a bit and are much more pleasant to drive.
some examples of hobbyist brands include Tamiya, HSP, TRAXXAS, 3Racing etc but you'll be paying over $150 for a RC + wireless remote.
I'm not well versed in RC hobby, perhaps try asking in the RC cars subreddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/rccars/@scrimshaw: remember the TOMY Char-G RC cars? Those things were super popular in the 90s, just two buttons, forward and spin. A toddler I had to babysit in my uni days absolutely loved playing with mine.
I wanted to buy one for my little niece for Xmas and was gutted to find they stopped making them years ago. They should seriously bring them back, lots of toys these days are licensed cartoon crap.
the cheapest one
Last time I was in Kmart they had rc cars for 20 bucks
Here's a list of RC cars at Kmart online
