Rugged Laptop Student

Sister needs a laptop,
I want to shortlist at a stretch $600, absolute reasons may push but tight casual student budget also.
walking warranty will count for a bit
I am typing this on a refurbished $220-$380 ebay HP elitebook 8460P. which i love personally buy she is not so fond off

Priorities
Decent ram.

Optical drive.
Moderately light total weight.
usable keyboard for big hands
13.5"-15.6" or close enough
Ssd.
I would prefer
sturdy metal chassis machines similar to my elitebook
at the lease a enterprise business machine for stability and better THERMAL management design
Decent ram.
upgradeable/replaceable battery

AM I TOO RIDICOLUS in my priorities given price is also number 1
thanks all in advance

You mention "Decent RAM" twice, is she using some particularly RAM-intensive software?

Could be like me and has a million tabs open in their browser (I have 92 on my mobile alone). I had to upgrade my RAM to 16GB from 4GB when I got my VAIO 5.5 years ago because of that.

      • I know I am, maybe I'm just over concerned

Is optical drive a must? Otherwise, refurbished ThinkPad X series are usually great starting points. Portable, great battery life, yet imminently repairable with plenty of parts on eBay (cheap too). I previously had a refurbished X230 for over 5 years, survived all the damages that 3 different continents and a war zone could muster.

    • I agree, ditch the included optical drive unless its an absolute must. You can always add one on later via USB. They go upwards from like $20-$25.

    Thinkpad T series is good
