what precautions should I take with a cheap removalist?

  • See if you can get some references.

Risk could be, that they do it really slow.

Also check up on their insurance cover too.

My last move was four year ago. I paid $80 per hour. Whole house was done in 2.5 hours. The travel time itself was around 50 mins. And this was the cheapest I could find and it was a cash job.

So at that rate you better check up. Unless your rate is only for labour and truck you are arranging. My movers had their own truck.

  • Based on my experience:
    a) Negotiate a maximum time to finish the move. For me, they loaded it quite quickly, but when it came to unloading, they seemed awfully slow…stretched it out to 5 hours for what could have been done in 4. (As an example, when they unloaded our potted plants, they unloaded it one by one, making a slow walk each time to the garden and back.)
    b) The total time charged usually includes travel from their depot and back. So, be prepared to add another hour's worth of costs.
    c) Get them in on a weekday - you can usually negotiate a discount.
    d) Be prepared for language challenges - I had 2 movers, one of whom didn't speak a word of English.
    e) Cash only. No receipt. As for insurance, they claimed they were covered, but I had my doubts.

But then I was paying $50 per hour for 2 men and a truck (negotiated down from $60), when the market rate was $70-80.
