Yes and no - ultimately the risks are quite low, but non-NAS drives aren't designed to operate 24/7, so they might have a shortened lifespan or might die earlier. They also don't have NAS specific features such as TLER (which you might or might not need). If you need a NAS drive, I'd go with a 4TB Seagate IronWolf or WD Red which tend to be around $170-$180 on sale if not a little less. You lose 1TB, but I think it's worth it.
what about the opposite? Using a NAS drive in a non-NAS system?
If you're using the drive as mass storage, then it's fine, maybe even preferable to use a NAS drive since they're made for long-term constant use. But if you're using the drive for storing apps/games…etc. stuff that you want to load quickly, then I'd go with a 7200RPM drive for better performance, or go with an SSHD which will help with random performance.
Thanks. I've got NAS (Ironwolf) drives currently in a PC that I use as a sometimes Plex server. It's not on 24/7, but next year I plan to build a dedicated server that is on 24/7. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong with the drives right now.
Oh come on Amazon, limit of 2 per customer? I need 3…
Does that mean I'd have to use a different account to order a 3rd, or is it really 2 per order? It might be 2 per order. Try making an order for 2, and then try making another order for the 3rd drive and see if that works.
I have four of these in my NAS (HP Microserver) and they've been really good.
However, there are two downsides to this particular drive.- They're rather noisy when they're busy. It has that deep crunching noise that tends to vibrate through any desk it's on.
- They do run hotter than the average drive and require good cooling. Most NAS' provide this, but some of the smaller ones don't.
Does anyone know how warranty will work with this import? Will we need to ship the item back to Amazon?
Yes i would say that it will need to be shipped back to Amazon in the USA.
They usually send out a Return Authority sticker or email, that allows you to post back for free if its within a certain time frame of purchase
Any disadvantage or risk in running this in 2-bay NAS, considering it's not a specific NAS model ?
