Recent eBay Purchase - Didn't Receive, No Resend or Refund

A recent expense has tarnished my opinion of buying on eBay. This may be a bit of a rant - sorry.

This was a simple ~$40 order from a seemingly reliable (99%+) Australian based seller. The order, shipped via Australia Post, didn't arrive after more than a couple of weeks. I reported the order not arriving. The reseller was initially responsive and asked me to wait; which I did for a further week. I asked him to resend - which he agreed to, but I did not see any emails confirming a second shipment so after a week or more I asked again. The seller responded with "yes i authorised them last week i think!" - yet still nothing. In the meantime, I had 5-10 online orders arrive to the same address for myself or other family members.

I ask the seller to confirm the second shipment, show me some sort of tracking information, or give me a refund - but the seller became unresponsive.

I asked eBay to intervene to mediate the case through the Resolution Centre. eBay reviewed the case and told me the seller had evidence of delivery, and denied my claim. I appealed to eBay and asked to see the evidence of the delivery, especially since I don't believe there is any, but eBay denied my appeal without any discussion or further communication.

Finally, I accepted I lost my $40 but wanted to leave negative feedback - nothing nasty, just factual "Didn't receive order. Seller unhelful. No resend or refund."

Interestingly this feedback was removed by eBay

"We also received the feedback you left for the transaction, but it's been removed from the seller's feedback profile because of a recent decision on the eBay Buyer Protection case."

and the threat …

"Based on the information we have, we'll automatically adjust your performance ratings or remove Feedback in some situations".

At all times I have been polite and factual in my communications. All I really want is the order I placed, but I have been left with the feeling I have been judged and denied my time in court.

So this leaves me with the following conclusions:

  • only buy on ebay with a trackable shipping option.
  • don't bother applying to eBay's resolution centre since doing so will deny me any public comment on the reseller.

Is my experience isolated? Or is this 'par for the course'?

You were denied public comment because they probably proved to ebay you did receive the first order or the resent item - most likely had tracking.

Try calling ebay 1800 322 928 for more info

    • Thanks, I'll try the phone number. As for the tracking information, AFAIK it wasn't tracked.

      The seller said…

ok checked with … in the warehouse downstairs. he showed me the manifest.
the [order] was picked and packed on the October 23 and posted October 24

That's all I could get regarding the delivery.

  • What evidence of it being delivered did the seller provide?

    • +1

The seller may have provided a tracking id in the inr dispute.

      • I was hoping they would have and it'd be passed on, so I could submit this to the PO, but sadly nothing was offered.

Australia Post lose shit all the time. Probably not the sellers fault.

Once you've paid, and the seller provides proof of postage, the goods are yours and it's your problem to locate them with Australia Post.

Australia Post lose shit all the time. Probably not the sellers fault.

      It's the sellers fault.

      • +3

Not the seller fault, but it becomes their problem.

If the buyer lodges a case with Auspost about a missing parcel, they simply say "GTFO, get the sender to lodge a claim, case closed".

        • Correct, if auspost lose it and the seller has valid proof of postage/tracking - it is not the seller's fault. The goods are the buyers.

Auspost being horrible to deal with does not make it the seller's fault.

eBay reviewed the case and told me the seller had evidence of delivery

Ok so it was tracked and delivered. What does the tracking show?

Interestingly this feedback was removed by eBay

incorrect feedback can be requested for removal. You item was delivered, so claiming it wasn't is incorrect.

    and the threat …

    That wasn't a threat

    Hopefully you paid via PayPal.

I was denied a refund after an appeal to eBay but was able to get a refund through PayPal.

My circumstances were different to yours but you if you feel have been wronged try going to PayPal instead.

    • I did actually. I'll try that option. Thanks.

    Credit card chargeback ?

    • I wouldn't unless OP doesn't mind seeing their paypal account disappear.

      • +1

I've done a few chargebacks against PayPal and my account still works

  • +1

First try PayPal and if no luck then do a credit card chargeback as suggested above.

  • Had this happen a few years ago on a $500 purchase. In the end I just felt like it was as though I was talking to brick walls so I gave up and tried to forget about it.

  • eBay reviewed the case and told me the seller had evidence of delivery, and denied my claim.

Ebay is usually very good to purchasers. This makes me think either someone stole your parcel, or it was some other screw-up on AusPost (incl. marking it as delivered/signed-for when it wasn't).

    • OK, perhaps I shouldn't think too badly about eBay. I had considered a stolen parcel but the window of opportunity would have been small. I work from home and when I expected a delivery I watch out pretty closely.

      • +2

It could also be Auspost - I think every delivery that I've received in recent memory has been "signed" for, and I'm fairly certain I haven't been home to sign for more than a few of them. Did the seller send a tracking number? Usually that's automatic through eBay - if there is, see if you can track it on Auspost; maybe it's in a warehouse somewhere.

    • +2

Yeah, you generally hear of the other side of the coin - where the sellers are the ones that get the resolution ruled against them. I've heard internet stories that the buyer could send eBay a photo of them with the delivered item and still have it ruled that it never arrived because the seller didn't use the accepted shipping methods/tracking.

Have you checked with Aus Post? We've had a package or two wait for us at the local Post Office, without a calling card. Only realised it was there when we went to ask for something else.

  • +1

Just last month auspos give me my neighbour parcel. Base on the shape of pack, it look like phone or something . When i saw it , i just took it to the neighbours. What i want say is maybe auspos mess up your item and put in wrong address

  • +1

If it was signature required, ask Auspost to show you the signature. If its safedrop, they take a picture now to show where they put the item.

but as @aragornelessar said, I was also waiting for an Aliexpress package for 2 months, finally gave up and raised a dispute. Went into the post office to pick up another parcel a week after my refund only for them to bring out my 'missing' package as well thats been sitting there for over a month. Apologised to seller and sent back the money.

  • Make a claim with auspost for item lost I think you can claim >$100.

    • Only the sender can make a claim

  • Stuff ebay, go to paypal, if they dont come to the party, then go to your credit card company. Ultimately they decide, not PP/eBay.

  • I had exactly the same thing happen. The seller also promised to send a replacement item. After a few days of no contact I asked for tracking info. No more contact. After another 2 weeks the item arrived with the original tracking number, some 3 weeks late from estimated delivery. No sign of the replacement and no communication from seller. Now one week post delivery the tracking still shows postage info received, not even that it's in transit or delivered. I always prefer to have to sign for the delivery but its not always available. I do not understand the cut off communication from seller after he offered to replace the item as it negated any good will from that offer. He could not have believed that I had actually received the item as it is still shown as not delivered. Such poor service from Australia Post and it's not even Christmas peak yet. It's a worry that with the increase in online shopping it's a gamble whether you will actually receive your purchase.

    • Interesting. After suggestions here I am in the process of going to Paypal for a refund. I've given up hope ever receiving a late delivery.

It's a worry that with the increase in online shopping it's a gamble whether you will actually receive your purchase.

I agree. I have less and less faith in Australia Post.

  • Last time i have same problem, never recive item seller give me tracking number,i check and it say delivery,so ebay close my case i lost money,i think problem from post office guy delivery wrong house or seller writer wrong address.some seller them print laber address some sale them dont have print so them write by hand and that easy go wrong.Ebay and Paypal never refund if them tracking item ready delivery, them dont care send wrong address or post office delivery wrong house. bad luck.

  • I think someone has found a way to game the postal system. I bought 2 WD Red HDD's from a Port Melbourne supplier via eBay and it was tracked as picked up then didn't arrive by a week after the approx. delivery date so I entered a query through AustPost. 2 weeks later I haven't received the item or a reply from AustPost. After contacting the seller through eBay they IMMEDIATELY sent me 2 more drives, without question which I find highly suspicious, as if they knew nothing had been sent…especially since I did a search on the company and their direct selling from the their web-store has a lot of 1 Star reviews for non-delivery.
I think there must be a way to make AustPost think items have been picked up when they haven't been. Maybe I'm just too cynical.
