HP Australia Cancelled My Laptop Order 1 Week after Payment. What Is My Recourse?

Dear helpful souls,

1 week ago I ordered a HP laptop online that is 45% off its list price. I paid with a credit card.

Yesterday when I checked the delivery status for the 10th time I discovered that HP had cancelled my order and refunded me.
No email notification. No explanation. No apology. No one contacted me. Nothing.

What is my recourse? Does it matter which credit card I used to pay it with ?

Please advise. Thanks a million.

…..Thanks for all your suggestions.

Moral of the lesson.

Do not buy anything from HP. Their website sucks and their customer service sucks. For example, I tried to buy their extended warranty for the laptop over the last 1 week and I had to make a few phone calls just to talk to somebody who might be able to help me.

No email notification . No explanation . No apology . No one contacted me . Nothing.

The retailer not contacting you before or after they issued a refund is bad form.

    What is my recourse?

Take your money and buy the item from a different retailer.

Also: don't buy extended warranties, you're covered by ACL.

      • Consumer guarantees only covers for a reasonable amount of time. Any more than a reasonable time requires a private agreement.

But does ACL cover next business day fixing of laptop?

This is funny. First, they couldn't even guarantee the the delivery of your order and then you couldn't even get hold of them to buy extended warranty. Still, you expect them to fulfill next business day

        • @jsbhatia:

I know. May be I dodged a bullet there when they cancelled my order.

I was pretty skeptical about their ability to deliver next business day fixing.

But I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and to prove it with the extended warranty.

Now I know HP cannot run a business in 2017 and I am beginning to feel sorry for all the folks who have bought from HP Australia.

Does it matter which credit card I used to pay for it with ?

No. It makes no difference. The card issuer can't force the retailer to sell the item to you.

If you have the right sort of AMEX they will bow down and kiss your feet sometimes.

      • That's like saying if you were in the top 1% then people will acknowledge you….

email them and ask them why. Hope (but unlikely) for some kind of goodwill eg voucher depending on how much it was. Other than that, nothing

    What is my recourse?

Get over it and move on.

  • Get a refund.

I have been buying from HP for like 20 years. NEver really had any problem except when they sent me to 3rd party places to get my laptop fixed like 10 years ago.

    • This is my first time buying from HP . And my last time too.

My impression is they cannot get their shit together , even in 2017.

Imagine a major company not having an online link to allow you to buy an extended warranty for the laptop you want.

Imagine calling a few HP numbers and nobody answering the phone during business hours.

Thanks HP . You can forget about pitching your servers and whatever else to me in the future.

      • Refund takes 3-5 days and buy a HP elitebook. Their warranty and support is better.

  • Did you buy off the HP Aus. or USA site?

    • +1

      HP Australia.

But I am not going to bother with HP USA either after seeing HP Australia's incompetence.

What do Ozbargainers expect these days? This is ridiculous. Obviously HP ran out of stock and OP got a prompt refund. Recourse? OMG! Poor little boy. I will cry for you

    • +1

No contact about the problem is poor form though. What if the OP wanted the laptop in time for Christmas and didn't realise that the order was cancelled in time to order another one? That's someone's Christmas ruined.

      • Got a prompt refund so can shop elsewhere. No reason for recourse. Yes, they should have notified OP out of courtesy

I've found HP products to be subpar in the past. Friend's have also had quite a number of issues.

    • Same here. Their quality standard has declined compared to other equally reputable brands.

as long as you have the receipt go to your nearest "Dept Fair Trading" and see what they have to say,I believe you can talk to them over the phone,

    • FT: Did you get the laptop?

      OP: No.

FT: Did you get a refund?

      OP: Yes.

FT: Okay…. what else do you want?

    Problem solved:

After some talking to them they decided to send a different laptop to me.

I never got any refund from them and I never said anywhere that I got a refund .

Funny how some readers put words in my mouth and claimed I got refunds.
