Sorry for my ignorance but why is Garmin so expensive?

In what way is it better than say a Gear S3 to justify the high price?

Go through the specs… It does pretty much every activity you can imagine. It isn't meant to be a smart watch, it's for swimmers, cyclists, ski etc.

They are for different target markets. This is aimed at people with a serious interest in sports and activity tracking (generally much more in depth activity tracking stats and abilities, especially for endurance events - e.g. triathletes, ultra marathon runners). It has a very long battery life (up to 1-2 weeks in my experience), and has some smart watch features (but these are mainly secondary).

Garmin are for serious sports (marathons, triathlons etc.). I have had the Fenix 3 HR Saphire for over a year now, its near indestructible. I've even worn it through tough mudder events.
The metal on the outside is a little scratched up and i have to replace the band due to a dog bite but apart from that its still going strong.

It's a really bad "smart watch" however notifications are really small, hard to scroll, doesn't have a touch screen, its a low res screen and has no microphone.

My first generation LG smart watch was heaps better but its not really a smart watch its a fitness activity recording device.

      • Thanks for all the responses, definitely not for me then.

can't believe it doesn't even has touchscreen and they want $400+ for one.

I paid $900 odd for the HR Saphire when they came out with a chest band and have never regretted it. Agree with the above comments, great watches and the choice for anyone who likes monitoring data. The recent app update makes it better. May upgrade when the Fenix 7 comes out, but at the moment, the 3 still works great. The 3 is for anyone who doesn't want to pay the full price of the 5 but with 'almost' the same features.

  • Anyone comment on whether this better than a Vivoactive 3? This looks pretty chunky

This is a much older model (Fenix 3 is 2015 model, with 'HR' variant was 2016 but is the same watch just with an optical HR monitor) and is bigger and heavier, but can do some things a vivoactive 3 can't (mainly multisport modes - such as triathlon, and open water swimming). If you're a casual runner, cyclist or any other sport, vivoactive 3 will probably be best - if you're a serious triathlete, or you really need to be able to track open water swims then the fenix 3 would be more suitable. I think the Fenix 3 probably has longer battery life too if you do ultra marathons or want to track day hikes.

A good website for in depth reviews and info about sports tracking stuff is dcrainmaker.com - he has reviews of pretty much all garmin (and many other brand's) products.

Get a Samsung Gear Sport. Much better imo.

  • Theres a deal on Slick Deals front page at the moment for the better Fenix 3 HR Sapphire for $339 USD shipped FedEx International or $279 if you want to send onto your own freight forwarder - could work out around the same price delivered for a much better model
