Likely Mobile Phone Prices on Amazon Australia

I've been holding off buying an Galaxy S8 Plus on the current Bing Lee Ebay special with all the hype about Amazon possibly starting up.

I'd be planning on using Shopper's protection on the credit card so ideally I'd like to buy from a shop that will stock it for years to allow the price to fall so I can claim any difference. Bing Lee doesn't seem to stock any older models eg Galaxy S6 to take advantage of this.

Just wondering if people think Amazon Australia prices for phones outright will be very competitive compared to 15-20% off specials on Ebay?

  • Probably about $1000. I look at Amazon UK and convert GBP to AUD. Although the UK has 20% VAT and we have 10% GST the extra "Australia" costs should account for any difference and be a reasonable estimate.

    • Are you trying to say that the difference between the UK and Australian prices is just 10%. If so you're living on another planet from the rest of us. If it were only 10% then the likes of Gerry Harvey wouldn't be complaining about Australians buying from overseas suppliers.

And the best advice I could give to the OP is perhaps he/she should wait and see and don't ask silly questions where others are requested to theorise what might be.

    If anyone is interested in finding out if Amazon AU will be selling a particular product, you can do this;

In the Google search bar, type site:amazon.com.au "your product", without the quotation marks of course. This will only give search results for the Amazon AU website. Click on the small green arrow underneath the hyperlink to access the cached page, as the original link may not be accessible.

E.g. Searching for Spigen products on Amazon AU gives no results, whereas if you use the above method you get multiple results for Spigen products. Here is an example of a product which is going to be sold on Amazon AU, however it's not accessible on the website as of yet.

And yes you could try searching directly through the Amazon website, however majority of the search results are hidden or you will get an error message when trying to access a link.

    • Yes, but you have no indication of price.
As a rule of thumb, I get the price from US and the price from UK, and average the two.
So a Galaxy S8 in US might cost $599 and one from the UK might cost £599. This means the AU price is between A$780 - A$1,050.
And most likely will be A$917, or AU$899 to be more precise.

All in all, this means Amazon AU will not be very impressive and they will barely match eBay prices.
It will make us OzBargainers a little frustrated seeing the same product with better deals coming in France, US, Canada, and sometimes UK.
However, it will mean an extra competitor, so there will be less chances for a single operator to price gouge. And when it comes time for sales in EOFY and Black Friday, we should see even better pricing and stock availability.

Case in point: Anyone remember Black Friday deals from +2 years ago? Target and BigW weren't really competing in the Entertainment category, which left JB Hifi almost have a monopoly on that sector for that week.

  • No chance. It'll be Australian stock from the Australian distributor. A lot of costs involve selling in Australia.

eBay sellers mostly from Hong Kong. No GST, different wages, different taxes.

I'm specifically referring to Australian Distributors as per my example, Bing Lee, The Good Guys. Not referring to grey models.

      • He's referring to Amazon will be getting their stocks from the same local distributor as per other retailers.

  • My hope for Amazon Australia is that it might bring some US only products to Australia. But as for prices not that excited to be honest except maybe for electronics over $1000 unless they bump the price up significantly.

There are a lot of greatly priced tv's and laptops in Amazon US but shipping and import duty tax usually kills the deal.

Here is to hoping Amazon Australia gives us some more competitive pricing on PC and other tech hardware.. But I doubt it.
