A little more expensive than https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/327856, but this appears to be the original asus version (so this is actually 1ghz)

  • Hi all, I read online these are some of the best to use for NBN?, I'm a bit iffy with how it all works (so not sure if I can get it down in 3 hours). But we have an NBN connection currently, can I buy this and use it for that, will I need a modem for it? Or can I just input my information, connect it up and should be good to go?

My parents got the router that came with the plan so would love an upgrade.

edit - Looks like it does need a modem, so I might have to connect to the original Modem/router if I want to use it. Cheers.

  • What's the technology used on your NBN connection?
If it's FTTN I don't believe it would work.
    FTTP Definitely

  • My connection is HFC, would this work?
And how is this compared to the Nighthawk R7000. Sorry but I'm pretty newbie with this stuff :(

    • I've got a Netgear R7000 router, flashed to Merlin xwrt, so it 'thinks' it's an Asus AC68U. Works fine for me on HFC NBN.

  • I have one of these routers and I am quite happy with it (paid $188). It has a robust WiFi signal (5gHz and 2.4) and 8 Gigabit ports.

If you already have internet through your HFC you will already have a modem which is probably handing out IP addresses to your phones, tablets PCs etc. This router can be plugged into that modem with a network cable.

You can set this up as an access point (AP) - it just acts as a "repeater" for your existing modem. If you do it that way, the network cable is plugged into the yellow WAN port and then you have 8 other ports to plug other equipment into.

If you don't set it up as an AP, plug the network cable into one of the 8 ports. (That is NOT the WAN port)

The instructions are fairly simple to get in and configure it.

Just be aware there has been a recent firmware update which fixes a well publicised security flaw. Look under "administration" and "firmware" once you have it set up. The update is straight forward and should only take a couple of minutes.

    • +1

By any chance you're talking about the AC88u cause this one only has 4 ports I think

      • Ah yes - brain fade on my part - 4 ports it is.

        Thank you.

Was thinking of the WD router it replaced.
