Computer Desks with Keyboard/Mouse Trays Not a Thing Anymore?

Hey guys,

This may disgust you, but I'm currently using my computer with my keyboard to the left on top of my PC case box, and my mouse to the right on my Desktop PC. I've always felt that using my PC with the keyboard directly in front of the screen (and me behind it) felt too close, and I was looking around for a desk that had the rolling trays that come out for the keyboard and mouse.

So far, I've found this and a decent range on eBay like this, though a bigger one would be nice too. Ikea and Officeworks don't sell any with the tray so if anyone knows anywhere else that might please help me out. I'm ok with something up to $350, pushing $400.

I'd rather not buy from eBay for warranty issues as well as not being able to see it before I buy it, but if anyone has a different opinion on that I'm all ears.

Thanks.

P.S. On further thought, the problem may be that my desk is not very long in depth, which is why it seems so close. So if there's a desk in general that you like please suggest those too!

  • Both those examples look like you will have zero room for mouse movement, let alone a mouse pad!

    • You're actually very right about that on the eBay one, I hadn't noticed. I guess I'll also have to take that into consideration when choosing the desk.

    • Or really bad arm movement to reach the mouse, compared to the keyboard

OP - the reason these have disappeared is it's a really bad position to be in.

  • +2

God I hated those slide out trays for KB+M on those old computer desks, thank god they are mostly gone.

  • You might want to have a look at some of the stand up desk options (which can be mounted on traditional desks) https://www.dicksmith.com.au/da/buy/kogan-corner-height-adju…

  • Yes it does sound disgusting.

Have you thought about using a monitor arm?

  • You need a big desk with enough depth to accomodate your LCD monitor + keyboard and mouse

If the keyboard and mouse are too close to you, you will end up having to type in an awkward position giving you RSI. Generally speaking, you should scoot your chair as close to the table so that you can rest your arms on the table, like shown in this video

If you lack the space for depth, you should consider putting the monitor on a VESA mount +arm and that will give you slightly more wiggle room.

BTW, my computer desk is really just a $100 dollar IKEA Melltorp dining table, which a lot of other people also use as office furniture. You don't need anything fancy…though if you work from home you could claim your furniture expenses on tax.

  • Thanks for the ideas guys. From the comments I'll most likely have a look at a larger table since the tray doesn't seem as good an idea as I had thought.
