Extended Warranty and ACL

I'm looking to buy the breville dual boiler coffee machine for $799 from Harvey norman.

Ive being offered 4 yr replacement product care plan for $100 that includes wear and tear items

I know my ACL rights but good luck trying to enforce them when it's 5 yrs down the track and something minor has gone eg a seal

Iv wouldn't even consider buying extended warranty but in this case where this machine will cop a beating it's tempting

Iv had great success in the past getting items fixed outside waranty but if a supplier refuses to help you will need to go to the tribunal at a cost of $50 to enforce ACL as fair trading is only a mediator

  • Honestly, for a $800 coffee machine - and assuming the extended warranty actually does cover everything, $100 for 4 years CAN make sense, if it's something you'll be using on a daily basis (or multiple times a day - big household, for example).

FYI I have this machine and it's broken down significantly during the warranty, needing very expensive repairs (new pump, seals etc.). Warranty has expired a few months ago, and it's starting to look dodgy again in terms of reliability. Make your own mind up, but keep in mind that these machines have a fairly high failure rate.

    Don't buy.

You won't be covered by wear and tear.

As it's a small appliance they can just pay you out a small HN credit corresponding with age in lieu of repair. You then have to buy a new machine which they will sneakily refuse to offer any discount on as they know you are forced to buy from them. Read the T&Cs.
