Trying to Buy a 4k TV (55" & $2k Budget)

Hi OzBargainers

Since I am getting a lot of help from OzBargainers lately, I will like to ask a favour again

I am trying to buy a 4k tv with strictly 55" as a size. I want a Smart TV and a good brand. My budget is $2000. With almost so many models I am not able to decide.

Can someone please clarify series 8 and 9 TV. I am trying to buy Samsung brand and the difference is almost $400-$600, is it worth the difference? Please help me to decide.

TV usage is gaming (will get PS 4 Pro) and Netflix mostly…….

    • I have a bolted rectangular cupboard and cant fit 60"……

  • I'm hoping to pick up LG-55UJ752T - https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/hd-televisio…. Reviews are positive.

      • I was going to get 654
        However the extra $300 gets
        Better internal speakers
        HDR for different image rendering
Zone dimming, some back light can down for better blacks

752 On choice.com.au was rated right up the top of the list
        654 only near the top.

    • Am i wrong because i have a concept that samsung tv os is very good compared to others

      • LG also Korean is exceptionally good

        I got the 55UJ752T
On choice.com.au was rated right up the to of the list

And it plays all mkv hs265 files
        Dlna
        surround sound via arc
And the internal Harman speakers are great too.

It has a Wii mote to control the TV so much quicker than buttons.

So for $1600 is the best choice.

  • Check this out - https://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/qled-vs-oled-tv/
My TV is a Samsung and I'd love to go Samsung again with my next one but apparently their QLED fails in comparison to OLED unfortunately.

    • Thanks for the info

  • If you can afford an additional $200, you should get a LG OLED55B7T!

It's an absolute steal at the moment.

    • Leaning towards samsung at the moment. Thank you for suggesting. Are the operating system good and user friendly on LG tv??

      • The 2017 series LG TVs use WebOS 3.5 which is an excellent smart TV OS. Very user friendly, fast and stable. The remote is also a 'Magic remote' which has a built in pointer so you can use it like a mouse on screen and has a microphone to do voice search if that's your thing.

Definitely stretch for an OLED if you can, way ahead of LCD's in the same price segment you are looking at. Only get a LCD TV if you are watching in a extremely bright room.

  • Few pointers

The 4K resolution at 55" and typical distances won't matter greatly, but the HDR can. Make sure you concentrate on that aspect.

Smart TV is fine provided it's cheap, but it will go out of date horrible fast. Many people aim for the best conventional TV, and then bolt on the latest and greatest smarts. Mind a 'smart' TV should only add a few tens of dollars to the price.

Gaming means minimal lag, so check up on that.

In general I'd be looking at Sony or LG OLED

      ^^this.

buy a well spec'd dumb TV and add a decent android box - reasonable ones for streaming/media centre, etc can be had for ~$50.

in a couple of years, if you feel the box is not cutting the mustard, then buy a new one.

smart TVs seem to provide an OK OS initially but then the manufacturer cease doing updates and you're stuck with that OS/android version.

      Planned obsolescence

    • Thanks i will keep that in mind.

    • Are the OS good on LG and SONY TV like samsung???

      • Sony is Android TV, LG is WebOS

Personally I'd put both above Samsung's recent efforts, but YMMV.

As I said, I wouldn't be relying on built in features anyway.

        • thanks i did not knew sony were android. I thought they had their own version of os.

  • No need of 4k according to me because there not such much 4k content .

    • Yeah true i guess future proofing. Haha

      • if you're future proofing, make sure you get one with an inbuilt HD DVD player

    • Complete BS. Almost all content is 4K now.

      • Like all the free to air content that's barely 1080p, the various standard definition DVDs people still own, multiple gaming titles that max out at 1080p, streaming videos from many sources that default to 720p unless your internet connection is faster than average. Yeah, almost all content is 4k… :/

        • Apple 4K, 4K Bluray of which I own about 40 now of at least, YouTube, Vimeo, Netflix Originals, My PC for browsing and gaming, PS4 Pro, Xbox One X.

I can go on and on and on. Any content not 1080p looks like garbage now even though upscaling is getting pretty good from all sides.

Free to Air upscales ok but it’s not exactly demanding content I watch - mainly reality stuff like the Block.

DVD is just not even chuckle worthy now. Supporting companies that still release in measly DVD should be punishable IMO. Can you imagine making a movie for $200 million dollars and years of work and the you see an idiot trying to save a few dollars and watching it 16 times less clear than 4K Bluray? I would go ape on anyone who dared to do that.

        • @auna: I'm with you mate, I absolutely think that people should watch content in the highest quality possible. It's just that the reality for lots of people right now is that there's still lots that's not 4K, and some that's not even 1080p. Keep in mind that not all films have been released on Blu-ray, let alone 4K Blu-ray.

  • 100% recommend stretching for an LG OLED if you can. Particularly if you watch movies from any angle at all. You'll notice on the Samsungs (even their "QLED"s) that the letterbox bars (the black bars above and below a widescreen movie) become blue as soon as you view the TV from an angle.

The smart features on LG are very good, the only real advantage of Samsungs is their "one box" if you're planning on wall mounting the TV. The inputs will be on a separate box. Having said that, how often will you actually change what's plugged into the TV?

It's also worth noting that most Samsungs this year don't have a 3.5mm audio out, only optical or HDMI. So any headphones would need to be Bluetooth or compatible with the aforementioned outputs.

    • Will keep that in mind thanks

      • Pre-Christmas sales should see the LG OLED55B7 close to the $2k mark too. If it's not an urgent purchase. Good luck!

        • Thank you once again.
