How Do I Do a PPSR (REVS) Check on a Caravan?

So I am about to purchase a second hand caravan (2006 model) and I'm trying to do a PPSR,however the VIN is not 17 characters in length.

The PPSR site requires it to be 17 characters in length or have the chasis number entered. When I try either, I cannot continue any further :(

The VIN I have is only 10 chars in length. The chasis number is 6 chars in length.

Any suggestions on how to go about this?

Thanks.

Ask the vendor to double check the VIN or send a photo. Must be 17 characters.

    • I have a picture of the plate and the VIN is not 17 characters. This is for a caravan so perhaps that makes a difference.

Someone on Whirlpool had the same issue: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2104686

Is there a hyphen anywhere in the 16-digit VIN number you have?

    • Thanks and no there was no hyphen. I have spaces.

  • On the PPSR, you have the option to select VIN or Chassis. Select Chassis. You could also try selecting pre-1986 vehicle.

A VIN is a global identifier of automotive type vehicles. Trailers, caravans, trucks, cars, bikes, they all have them after about 1988 (correct me on that, pls) if it is a “2006” trailer/caravan that was made by a factory, it should have a compliance place fitted stating the VIN. ALL VIN’s are 17 letters and numbers long. They cannot contain O or I and must be a 1 or 0.

Either way, if you want to find out more about it, ring the manufacturer with the details and ask them about it. For example, if it’s a Jayco, ring them and ask, this is the chassis number, does this have a VIN? If so, what is it? Get previous rego details and confirm it. Check the rego papers, as this will have the correct ID.

Also note that some states have different requirements for trailers and caravans with regards to ID numbers and plates, so even ring you local registry and see if they can help…

And for info sake, I have a motorcycle trailer here that I made years ago in Victoria, no VIN required if under a certain size/weight. Moved to NSW and had to get a compliance plate. RMS issued me with a new ID and can confirm that it’s only 11 numbers/letters long.

  • The VIN number on the plate does not have the full 17 characters, as it has spaces where characters should be. But I asked the seller to send me a picture of the VIN number as recorded on paperwork, such as registration or certification, and recorded was the full 7 characters.

The characters on the plate was correct but just incomplete - strange.
