Contact Lense Prescription

I got my eye tested at specsaver for contact lenses which was free as long as you buy the contact lenses from them. However, they were selling the contacts for a very high price ($110) which is available online for $80. But online websites require a copy of prescriptions for which specsaver will charge $50 in case you want to buy it outside.

So, just seeing if anyone knows a good place to get prescription and contact lenses.
Medicare only covers prescription for glasses. I found OPSM charge $40 for contact prescription.

try independent optometrist, because my local one gives free trials which you can see the power of, and he also gives a free lesson on how to wear them(heard that major optometrist charge for a "how to wear and clean contacts" lesson

i buy my contacts off clearlycontacts.com.au
there shipping is alright but its fast though, most likely faster than your optometrist, cheaper and more range

here is the item you are planning to buy
its $67.95 for up to 7 boxes buy a bulkrate of $62.95 for 8 boxes onwards

  • Yeah i just found clearlycontacts as well. Couple of questions regarding them:
    1. Do you need to fax/scan your prescription to them (other online retailers require you to do that)? I already know the prescription as I wrote it down when they did the eyetest. Just don't have official precription.
    2. Do they give you proper invoice i.e. with item number, provider number, etc. so that you can claim it against the health fund.

CLearlyContacts seems to be the cheapest. Massive difference between $110 from specsaver and $67.95 from clearly contact for the same thing.

    • 1) Nope! you do not need to send them your prescription via fax/scan because you just need to know your BC(Base Curve) your Prescription(D) and also make sure you have the right diameter of the lens.Best to trial them first from optomeetrist to see if they suit you.

      2) Yes! They do send a proper invoice. Images below

NOTICE ON BACK, IT GIVES ABN OF CLEARLY CONTACTS

ALSO MAKE SURE YOU USE THE 10% DISCOUNT CODE, don't know when it ends but its on homepage
      COUPON CODE: FIRST3X58C

      • Thanks a lot for that.
        That was really helpful.
I will definately order from them.
Unfortunatly they didn't have MBF listed on the first page of your scan. I'll contact them tonight to confirm that they have a provider number for MBF.
        Cheers.

        • welcome!!!

  • i have never been out-of-pocket/paid for a glasses or contact lens prescription - i always receive them at the same time when having my eyes tested which medicare covers at both independent optometrists and opsm/specsavers

online retailers here and overseas do not require you to send them a copy of your prescription to purchase from them

i last bought from aclens but previously have shopped at coastalcontacts and netoptical

  • I have also ordered from clearlycontacts but then NIB stopped recognizing them, so I can't claim for contact lenses if I buy through them anymore. Clearlycontacts is great due to their best price guarantee. When I bought mine, I found that quicklens.com.au had waaay cheaper prices. Even though quicklens isn't an Australian based company, clearlycontacts still beat their prices by i think it was 10%.

  • I called clearly contact and unfortunately MBF is not affiliated with them either :(.
The guy said they are in processes of renewing with them but I don't think that is something I will wait for.
I am guessing you can really claim from non-australian online stores either. So, all .com domains are out as well.
The quicklens.com.au only have 30 pack for $29. Which is around $87 for $90. Thats close to $110 quote of specsaver. In that case specsaver will be better as out of pocket would be similar if you consider $10 shipping cost which wont be covered by MBF.
I'll have to scan through the massive ozbargain page to try to find a retailer similar to clearlycontacts which is covered by MBF.
    Thanks for everyones suggestion.
