Brand New Oven Top Has Problems but despite 5+ Repairs in the past Few Months, They Still Won't Replace It. What Are My Options?

There are 5 burners and only 1 gives problem. I am unable to light it up in a timely manner - eg, others would light up after 1-2s, but the faulty one, have to hold on for at least 10-15s (which is clearly abnormal). After a few weeks, it won't light up at all. Called in their technicians 5 times already and they came and "fixed" the problem, but the problem will reappear after a few weeks.

We demand a replacement but they denied. The argument they have is, everytime they come they are able to fix the problem (only temporarily), but the problem will return after a few weeks. I had a feeling they will keep doing this until my 1 year warranty expires then off you go, sucker.

So question to all ozbargainers: what are my options and what can I do to escalate the matter as it seems the company does not care.

NB: I have already tried Bikies and consulted with the "Capital W" financial analyst with high yield car investment, but it still hasn't solved the problem.

  • If you have 5 stovetops are you operating a commercial kitchen? If so maybe different consumer laws apply?

      probs means burners?

defo referring to 5 burners with 1 dodgy that won't lit up.

      • Yes.. 5 burners but 1 dodgy one tht wont lit up on its own. Edited original post.

        • Meaning it will work, you just have to light it manually?

Where did you buy this cooktop and what do the technicians say the problem is each time they come out? Does he only stay for a minute or two? Does he have to bring new parts each time?

Sounds to me like a gas flow problem, perhaps a loose connection, or a faulty igniter.
But then if it is one or the other of those problems, it should take a single fix - can't see how it'd keep reoccurring.

What happens if you hold the knob down and put a lighter next to the burner? Does it light straightaway?

We didnt buy it. It came with the new apartment.

The technician say it is the ignite bit that keepa falling down n not touching the round burner so everytime he just digs it back out but it will only be a temp fix.

I suspect there is a manufacturing defect (ie parts didnt fit what it should) but they refuse to replace the whole thing.

Doesnt seem to be a gas flow problem. All other burners r working wonderfully.

Perhaps you could do a search you particular model and if it turns out that it's a common problem, there might be a quick fix you can suggest to the technician. (I guess the technician has an interest in the problem not being fixed since he probably gets paid a fee to come out each time).

IMO though, the problem is quite minor and I guess that's why they have, so far, refused to replace the whole unit.

Just conjecture-ing, but that part of the burner does stick out a bit, could you be inadvertently hitting it/squashing it in how you're using the burner possibly?

It shouldn't be "falling" - next time they come out to fix it, after they've fixed it and haven't left yet, test the durability of that bit by pushing (softly) on it and seeing if it falls down again, if it doesn't when you push on it a little, it could just be you're putting (heavy) stuff on it while using the burner and that's what's causing the issue.

Especially if it's the same one, is it somewhere that you or someone else might be habitually putting pots or pans?

        • That is actually the one we use least.. So u dont think it may be related to heavy stuff on it.

The weird thing is it will always work for a week or 2 after the technician's visit before it will give the same problem again.

          @fatboyslim:

Again, just pure conjecture, but maybe someone puts stuff near there because it's the burner you use the least?

But yeah, that's very strange otherwise because it seems to be a physical issue, but a physical issue shouldn't take a week to show itself, it either works (is the right shape) or it isn't.

Try the "pushing on it after it's just been fixed" thing, and take a photo of the burner including the ignition part too. Then when it breaks again, compare that to the photo and see if it is a problem with the position of the igniter.

        • @0blivion:

How is the ignite bit meant to be hold in place? Maybe it isn't held in place properly and it's gravity that's causing it to slowly fall each time after a technician has come to lift it up to where it's supposed to be.

        • @Love a bargain:

Honestly, beats me. I have a gas burner stove top, but the igniter parts are solidly just on the stove-top surface. I think if I tried to push it down it'd just put a hole in me instead.

        • @0blivion:

I'm intrigue too (will have to have a closer look at the one at home tonight).

Wonder if there's any gas technician amongst us who could shed some light on this.
