Alternatives to Aussie Broadband - Still Another 4 Month Wait

Hey All,

Just been a (little bit) shafted by ABB and looking for recommendations. So I sign up for ABB about 6 months ago with service coming to my area imminently. An NBN tech actually said the property was connected to the NBN in early May. So I've been getting regular updates from ABB saying "NBNCo has had a problem in establishing a connection to your home. We're waiting for them to fix this".

So today I get a call from Dodo (current ISP with ADSL2+) saying they can connect me immediately (as copper being disconnected March 2018 - NBNco confirmed): alarm bells ring! I contact NBNco and they confirm "the premises are now active on the nbn™ network".

Call ABB to query and they tell me 80% cap reached; not an NBNco problem after all. Have to wait another 4 months for them to secure more bandwidth.
Super annoyed, now NEED AN ALTERNATIVE NBN SERVICE PROVIDER - RECOMMENDATIONS FOR 4074 (Brisbane)?

(P.S. would love a vid link that explains soft contention rates and other NBN stuff I need to understand to get around its issues)

Cheers,

EDIT: THANKS ALL!! GONNA GIVE MUNGI A GO… I'll post an update on how I find them (if I remember)

  • BTW, Canstar just tells me these "big five" companies, which I'm skeptical of: https://www.canstarblue.com.au/phone-internet/internet/nbn-p…

And the other way, whistleout mentions "premium evening speed" from companies I've never heard of: https://www.whistleout.com.au/Broadband/Fastest-NBN-Plans

  • Lol, Dodo call you out of the blue and you believe them??? If so, I have a bridge to sell you

(ABB can't control what NBNco do, can't influence them to hurry up, neither can anyone else)

      Read again.

ABB didn't notify OP once NBN is available, and other ppl within OP areas already connected with ABB and reached their 80% cap hence ABB won't connect OP until they buy more bandwidth.

        Read again

"NBNCo has had a problem in establishing a connection to your home"

Not ABBs fault that NBNco don't pass on updates.
Not ABBs fault it took 4 months.
Dodo couldn't have sped things up.

        • +1

Do you even know how to read ?

OP subbed ABB wait NBN to come
          OP received dodo offer
OP call ABB, ABB : "Ops ! NBN indeed available now but sorry your area reach 80% cap, you need to wait 4 months until we buy more bandwidth"

NBN is available in OP area right now !!!!!

          Geezzz!!!!

        • In case you didn't know, that 80% cap is ABB policy for not overloading their own bandwidth. (Nothing to do with NBNco)

In case you didn't know, any telco can buy more bandwidth from nbnco.

          @phunkydude:

Who's fault is it for the delays the last 4-6 months?

        • +1

          @zeggie:

What are you trying to argue here ?

No one is complaining the last 4-6 months ??

Who is complaining the last 4-6 months ???

OP is complaining that his every neighbor (ok, maybe not every) has already connected to ABB's nbn, which OP left in total dark even though he already subscribed to them 6 months ago.
Now he has to wait for another 4 months for ABB to buy more bandwidth because OP's neighborhood has already subscribed to ABB's 80% capacity.

        • @phunkydude: Yep, so it’s probably my fault for trust ABB to get me up and running ASAP. Given they’ve delayed me this far, I’m not keen on waiting any longer. A month-by-month could work and if i’m not happy, switch to ABB in March

          @phunkydude:

Actually it does involve NBNco as it's to do with AussieBB using their own NBN POI's which they keep at 80% capacity, so they have to wait for NBNco to install new ones at the location in question. A lot of other ISP's don't use their own POIs and just resell access to other ISP's POIs who just cram people on them (till everyone is on modem speeds and enough people complain :P ).

Having just gone through this (waiting for AussieBB) and using a different provider, I can tell you there was a definite improvement as soon as I got my AussieBB connection especially with latency in games and peak hour access.

IMO it's worth switching over when AussieBB is available to you, depending of course on what you want out of your Internet Service. It may be that your satisfied with the provider you get in the interim.

    • Dodo are my current ISP: it was a call to say copper being disconnected soon and I cant keep my ADSL2+

      • Dodo have a sweatshop of staff calling everyone in your postcode saying "service available!" "ADSL being disconnected!" they legit have no idea and have not conducted any searches for anyone's specific property. Just blatant telemarketing, regardless if you're an existing customer.

        • Either way, service is available and ABB kept this to themselves

      • You have 18 months to switch over from when NBN first gets connected to the area.

If they're trying to rush you over, it's a simple sales tactic.

        • NBNco gave Mar 2018 as the copper shut off date

    • So ABB blamed NBNco and said that I could NOT be connected because of an NBNco issue, when I actually could be connected, except ABB's policy not to take on more than 80%. (The fact that I didnt get in this 80% in six months waiting is a whole 'nother gripe)

    • BuzzTelco! I'll take two of @zeggie's (sorry) bridges too!

Mungi offer is tempting, but, again, I'm skeptical. Anyone with a positive experience?

  • Skymesh is probably the next best thing. Although I experienced some problems and moved to ABB they are worth a try since they have no contacts.

    • Skymesh has been taken over by another company, and their service is significantly downgraded now. They never take my phone calls and also ignore emails — didn't used to be the case before takeover.

    • Id also recommend TC

      • How's Congestion?

  • +1

Honestly going off of what you just said, I've no idea who's actually telling the truth. Obviously in ABB's interests to say that it's an NBN Co. issue. On the other hand, it's also obviously in NBN Co's interests to tell you that the service is available in your area, even if the connection to your particular building has issues. And again, also also in Dodo's interests to tell you that they can connect you to NBN, even if there might be issues and they can't.

    • LOL - that’s why I’m after an objective recommendation from u guys ;-)

      • Honestly in your case, might be easier to go old-fashioned and ask a neighbour - they're probably the only ones who can tell you 100% (or 99%) if NBN is available or not, and maybe even tell you how easy/hard their ISP made it to connect.

The NBN rollout's a bloody mess, on-the-ground is probably the only reliable source of information.

        • Very true… the consensus here is that they are all shit - most aren’t OzB’s, so just accepting of major networks
Haven’t found anyone on ABB yet? (Go figure)

        • +1

          @T-Quizzle:

The 80% rule for ABB is so they can provide a consistent and reliable service to all the customers on their network. Its ABB's issue but they could be waiting on NBNCo before they can purchase more CVC or they are waiting for more interest from potential customers before spending big to buy more CVC.
Either way, I wouldn't be too critical of ABB, they have chosen this business model to provide a better service. If they made exceptions, then they would be going against the whole reason that some customers choose ABB, decent service.

I would look at Telecube as they have been mentioned many times in the same sentence as ABB. I think there is also some deals on WP if you look around or ask a rep.

  • Not sure why myrepublic doesn't get more love and mentions here. Cheap and fast (and reliable once set up)

  • +1

I’m on ABB and couldn’t recommend them highly enough. Amazing speeds even 3km from the exchange, and super fast response times if I ever have any trouble.

    • +1

Cool story bro. But you're not answering the OPs question.

      • -1

        Actually I was :-)

Haven’t found anyone on ABB yet? (Go figure)

        • Out of context bro… that was talking about my neighbours. I am well aware of the standing recommendation for ABB, but given they can't/won't connect me…

  • Nothing unusual about this. Good luck!
Meanwhile can you go with someone on ADSL2+?
The will surely flick you over to NBN when the time comes

  • Remember when your area goes RFS you are not assured of getting NBN access. There are over 100,000 who cannot connect.

Have a look at the providers, and also their VOIP offerings. Some include all calls to land lines, some calls to mobiles as well. Some have locked down hardware, and it is different hardware with each RSP.

You have 18 months or so to decide, but may find the nbn connection faster
