How Do I Find Bulk Billing Doctors (Brisbane)

Gday fellas

I'm somewhat befuddled when it comes to finding full bulk billing doctors these days. I cannot get a health care card despite being entitled (wife is an immigrant, complicated, won't go into here) so I'm having to pay the $37 or so every time I go to the GP.

This is unless I use one of those home-call service things, where it is $200 but as long as you have a medicare card it is fully bulk billed.

Anywho, my question is, is there anyway to know - like a list, or search engine, or something - if there are any clinics that fully bulk bill without a HCC? It used to be the norm a long time ago but it seems like it's never the case anymore?

It seems odd that if I physically go to a clinic I have to pay, but if I have a doctor come to my home it's free.

Anyone else think this is odd?

Cheers!

Plenty around, you'll have to give a location before people can help you though.

    E.g. for NSW:

    https://healthengine.com.au/appointments/bulk-billing-gp/

That's just from a quick google for "NSW bulk billing doctors list". Call up to check beforehand, obviously.

No worries, glad to help. ($37 a visit is kind of ridiculous….)

  • I’d rather pay for an experienced Doctor instead of having a jnr Doctor who hasn’t built up a real life database yet.

…. Whether a doctor bulk-bills or not only reflects on whether the bulk-bill or not, nothing else.

You roll the dice either way, I've had both private and public doctors who have no clue and work through a script.
I've had young doctors who were more invested and with wider knowledge than older ones. Sometimes older ones can be behind on new treatments etc.
Best practice is to just keep trying different doctors until you find one you like.

You don't need a health care card for bulk billing, just your medicare card, either at a clinic or home doctor who accepts it. Not sure of any in the CBD but there are plenty in the suburbs.

My GP does not bulk bill but they give me a few dollars off the full price because I have a health care card.

  • The GPS that do home visits are usually for out of hours emergency. They are not keen to write an ongoing script so they cannot become your regular GP. I was told that because the law says that if you die at home, a GP must declare you dead and you cannot have a home visit GP do that. Only a regular GP can do that. Are there any walk in clinics (those that are first come first serve?) they often bulk bill?

    • Hey thanks. Your search show up a bulk bill dr near me that I didn't know about. Too funny. Oh forgot to mention I am not in Brisbane either!

      • Haha, might be to do with Google maps if your location is turned on when you search, glad I could help
