Attempting to begin some small projects at home starting with a garden planter boxes. Just wondering if Bunnings is the only source for buying wood? Are there other cheaper options to buy wood in Melbourne?

Since Bunnings took over Homebase in the UK they now control the entire worlds wood supply.

If you don’t mind the shabby chic look, can check out council chuck outs

I’ve also heard of some places where take in left over building materials and then re-sell for cheap. A lot of builders/tradies go to these

    • hey there, how do I get more info on council chuck outs?

Oh chuck outs, you're referring to hard waste collection day!

Check Gumtree for small companies who sell decking timber and other materials. They also sell sleepers (usually treated pine) which are ideal for planter boxes. Or spend more an use fencing/screening material for a more elegant finish.

I wouldn't use treated pine if I was growing edible plants in it, wouldn't also use railway sleepers due to all their chemicals and possible asbestos brakes all those years ago.

    Look for houses being demolished.

  • Thanks for the ideas guys, I think I will hunt on Gumtree.

Look at second hand lumbar yards as well. Presumably planter boxes will be lined.

Look in the bunnings off cut bin - near the saws they use to cut customer purchases. I have got a few good $2 and $0 deals there for small projects. Very hit and miss though.
