Urgent Advice Needed on Panel Beater Quote

Hi,

This is my first post on here, hopefully someone can help.

My friend rear-ended a 2007 Holden Statesman last week. We have only been able to get one quote so far (Note, the Peugeot is my friends car not the other drivers car, obviously not a statesman).
I haven't seen the car or the damage caused.

It would be fantastic if someone could confirm if this look roughly reasonable for replacing what looks like a couple of parts. (I know from experience the prices can vary hugely between different shops). My friend if happy to pay for the repair but doesn't want to get ripped off.

The guy also wants my friend to meet him at the panel beater to pay when he drops off the car. Seems a bit dodgy, I would think payment would be after the car is fixed.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Just as a bit of background, she had no third party insurance, so will need to pay for the repairs to the other car…

That doesn't seem that dodgy imo. Dodgy would be them wanting the cash on giving you the quote. I mean, they're entitled to it, but paying at the panel beater directly to the panel beater would mean they're at least definitely getting the work done.

As to the total amount - can't say without knowing how much damage there was, but a few grand for rear-ending someone isn't that out of the ordinary.

    • Must have been a tiny bump….no unseen damage to the other car's internal frame/skeleton?

Easy to do lots of damage to a car without damaging the actual chassis. And if there IS damage to the chassis - in most cases that'll be a write off and OP would be looking at the value of the car. Which, yeah it's an old car, but an 07 Statesman is still worth more than a few grand.

Edit, had a quick look: https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/results?q=(And.Service.Carsales..Make.Holden..CarAll.keyword(2007%20statesman).)&area=Stock&vertical=car&WT.z_srchsrcx=makemodel

2007 Holden Statesman seems to go for about $7k to $15k. So $3k for some repairs? Eh.

  • what was the condition of the Statesman before impact?

Any picture of the damage? Their rates look cheap $30.90 but some of the hours quoted look tad bit inflated. An hour to clear the rear boot area? Can't say without looking at damage if it needs a new rear bar or the existing one can be fixed. Also, what about pre-existing damage of the car? I would ask them to get at least couple more quotes (for anything, not just an insurance job) to know who is on the park. Also, the other thing that adds to prices, warranty of work done.

  • Thanks for the quick replies!

I'm not sure of what the actual damage looks like, I'm still trying to get a photo sent through. My friends car for reference: https://imgur.com/a/4QWhI (she decided to write it off as the repairs were just about more than she paid for the car). I'll put a photo of the other car on here if it comes through.

I guess the main objective of the post was to make sure the prices are not inflated by $1000ish over what they could be.

I agree, more quotes would be good. I've asked my friend to ask the driver to try and get at least one more quote.

    • she paid for the car

Trying to get out of the friendzone are we?

Just helping a friend who's never had an accident before!

are you looking for an accident to happen?

  • Just as a bit of background, she had no third party insurance, so will need to pay for the repairs to the other car…

Why? Why does she not have any insurance? What if she rear ended a Ferrari?

I agree, more quotes would be good. I've asked my friend to ask the driver to try and get at least one more quote.

The driver can tell her to bugger off. He only has to get one quote to have the damage fixed. Your friend doesn't get to say "It's too expensive"

The guy also wants my friend to meet him at the panel beater to pay when he drops off the car. Seems a bit dodgy, I would think payment would be after the car is fixed.

He'd want the panel shop to have your friends details, maybe even credit card details so he isn't left with the bill if your friend were to disappear… Not saying she would but people would do that.

I'm guessing he doesn't have insurance either.

    • Why?

She doesn't make the smartest decisions sometimes and was trying to save a few dollars. She has learnt her lesson and is very thankful she didn't hit a more expensive car. Now that she's spending a few years worth of third party insurance to get the car fixed and another car for herself.

I figured that, but we can always ask, and she was originally meeting him in the city to hand over cash, so paying the panel beater is an improvement.

      • Just from the looks of it your friends car shudnt probably cost a lot to fix. I had something similar happen - costed me $700 to fix it all up. But i had to do bit of run around to find parts from junk dealers.

  • Rear sensors on a 1977statesman? What is it sensing?🤔🤔

  • Quote doesn't seem too extreme, unfortunately.

But you don't pay before the work is done, refuse that.

The other person doesn't have to do the work, the quote is an estimate of their lost value as a result of damages, and that's what your friend should pay as compensation. For all its worth they can choose to scrap the car and keep the $3k. Just make sure, that you get a signed statement, that the payment is for the full settlement of the damages.

Tell your friend that altomic from ozbargain says she is ducking idiot for not having insurance. Because insurance is so cheap.

    • just don't rear end cars.

  • Without seeing the actual damage it's hard to say.
But 3k to fix a rear end sound about right.
When my old man CG lancer got rear ended, we got a quote from our panel beater (only use OEM parts) which cost 9.5k 😂
2x what the car was worth so they wrote it off

  • Just looking at the quote…

They are quoting 1.5 hours just to remove/install both tail lights. This should about 10 minutes max.

5 hours of work for the spare wheel well? Must be in a very bad way.

    • And thread was posted 4 months ago… likely sorted by now

      • I didn't notice. It popped up in my "hot topics" section of the daily OzBargain email yesterday for some reason.
