Have You Changed Careers to Something Completely Different?

Saw the post on whether or not you're in a job you hate or like and it got me thinking.

Has anyone here done a drastic career change? One where they may not have had the necessary skills or experience?

If you wouldn't mind sharing, what was it.

What were you doing and what did you change to? How did you go about facilitating a change?

Sole income earner here for a family of 4 and would love a career change out of IT.

Thanks :)

I started this post in Aug 2015, asking people what they studied for and what they ended working in. Has a lot of information and a massive amount of responses.

    • Thanks for the link

  • Have you thought about moving into an associated role like Project Management for IT projects, etc. The background in IT helps you to understand what is being delivered but it is a broader range of skills and challenges.

I'm not going to lie you're in a pretty tough position to change careers.

I think you would need to work out where you want to go, your partner would then need to begin working (I'm assuming that you'll take a fairly hectic hit on your wage, and may need to study). If you need to study then you can always do that through open university and continue working in IT.

BUT I would suggest changing jobs within the same industry before completely changing careers. If a job change doesn't do it for you then give the career change a crack. I know that I enjoy what I do, but I have worked jobs that have made me re-think my career. You might think that your employer isn't the issue but once you change you may find that it is the case.

The people you work with play a large role in contributing towards whether or not you enjoy what you do.

    • I agree wholeheartedly. I am applying within the same field as it's the best chance of a change.
      Thanks for the response

I made a change about 10 years and never looked back. Self belief goes a long way, (Hard to maintain though sometimes)!

Good luck if you do change careers mate.

started off in medicine, changed to civil engineering, then policing !

    so yes, changes are possible

for me, i did it for job enjoyment, regardless of income

  • Jiminy Cricket would say take a few more years of pain if you have 4 kids. A lot of jobs are working for the man.

    • Yep, I don't think it can hurt applying elsewhere. Just as long as I can do the role.

Started off in pathology, went into teaching, about the time I started my studies in teaching, I also got into car detailing. Now I'm deciding between teaching and car detailing.

    • My wife is on maternity leave but is a teacher. Do car detailing.

      • Haha yeah I'm covering a maternity position for half of next year and will probably do casual teaching + car detailing for the remainder of the year. We teachers definitely don't get paid enough for the amount of effort and hours that go into our work. The other day, I made close to my fortnightly teacher's pay by detailing one car.

    • Teachers are doing a thankless job. I'll be doing going into my first teaching prac next year and am scared shitless with the amount of work that needs to be done like lesson planning, behaviour management, marking etc. Do you have any tips?

Nah don't be scared. You'll have the support of your school, your uni and your mentoring teacher. I'm in the middle of my first block of teaching (covering maternity leave in term four).

In terms of work, just be diligent and plan out what you'll be teaching one-two weeks in advance (that way you ease the burden on yourself and don't feel bombarded with planning class-to-class).

My biggest tip would be to exude confidence, kids can tell if you are nervous and unconfident then you're inviting them to walk all over you. Even if you aren't naturally a confident person (like me), fake it till you make it. Has worked well for me so far. If you don't know something, don't lie and make it up in order to seem confident. Display your confidence in admitting that you don't know it but will find out and get back to them. Hope that helps.

Btw this is in the context of high school science/maths.

        • Excellent advice, thank you! I'll implement all this into my practice.

yes, i was a Marketing Director and changed to Director of Marketing.

Were a broker. Now in progress of changing to a commercial pilot. Doing my flight training now. Have not regretted yet.

  • I went from pushing trolleys at woolies to standing in lines at Centrelink.

  • Reckon there would be a lot of people who either started or transitioned into teaching
I gave it a go when I was 22, then went back to uni for 3 more years and now doing something different

  • I worked as Computer Support Officer with Centrelink (there 17 years). Now working as Assistant in Nursing in aged care, I started a couple of months ago. Both jobs were/are very engaging and I love/d them both. I've recently done Certificate 3 in aged care and Diploma of Nursing to retrain.
