How Is The Experience Using 2K/4K Monitors for a Typical Software Development Work?

Hi Ozbargainers,

How is your experience on using a 2K or 4K monitor for work purpose and surfing? I know it's great for gaming but, I'm looking for a monitor which suits for both work (70%) and a less gaming (30%). Currently I have shortlisted this monitor. Please shed some lights on it.

The first question I'd ask is - is there any specific reason you're looking to go 2k / 4k?

I went 4k because I wanted more desktop real estate, almost went with multiple 27" monitors but decided at the last minute to go with a large 4k panel which I then split up into various partitions - does a superb job.

If you were to try and replicate that setup on a 28" 4k screen I'm not sure you'd be able to read text on-screen and that sort of thing, making coding an absolute nightmare.

Maybe someone who actually has one of those will chime in, but that's my 2c based on my experience with a larger 4k panel.

    • I'm just curious to try on 2K/4K displayed with my laptop. I have Alienware m14xr2 with Nvidea GT650, does it support 4K / 2K output?

WRT resolution, I think you're right, the text might appear too small to work on. I'm totally confused which one to go for :(

      • The GT650 might support 3840x2168, but I doubt it's going to be capable of maintaining a good framerate under just about any circumstances. From memory minimum requirement for 4k is a GTX970.

        • I have tried this monitor with my laptop yesterday and it was blurry. I tried changing my NVIDEA control panel settings to use the Graphics card instead of Integrated Graphics but, no luck. Do you know what needs to be done to remove blurriness?

        • @Sowny:

First up, make sure you're using the NVIDIA gpu not the integrated

          1. Check your resolution when connected to the screen, it may be defaulting to 1920x1080, but you want 3840x2160.
          2. Check your refresh rate, it's probably defaulting to 30hz, increase it to the highest available value (59+)

          That's all I've got…

        • @Gronk: all good mate! I have pulled the trigger for https://www.harveynorman.com.au/acer-28-rt280k-4k-ultra-hd-t…, and it's impressive. I now work on a 4K monitor with multiple split screens..

          Cheers!
