LED lights are back on sale for half price at Woolworths
BAYONET
13W 1400 Lumens Globes are $7.50 white warm
8W 806 Lumens Globes are $5 whitewarm
how bright are they mate?
If you're used to a 100W incandescent or say 20W+ fluoro, go the 1400 lumen.
I the find the 800 lumen while ok for general lighting, just not quite bright enough.
The old Philips 10.5W 1000 lumen were actually quite good, but they were discontinued and only had 9.5W 800 lumen (which I see have reduced to 8W now)
I've got a 13W in a 4x4.5m room though and it's good.
Basically if you want the room bright enough to work in, start with at least 1000 lumens,
Pretty bright. I started off with a 800 lumen > 1100 lumen > 1400 lumen in my study room. Each upgrade felt like a drastic step up and you really notice how much more light covers your room.
I agree with @bamzero that 1000+ is necessary for a work room. Having 1400 just makes it that much better (feels like day time even when its night).
I want a bayonetta light bulb too, OP.
My bad, this is what happens when you post on a phone :)
Phone's fine.
I originally wrote bayoneta instead of bayonet :)
Do I need to print it ?
Bunnings don't carry these anymore so no price beat unfortunately.
What? They removed philips LEDs entirely?
No but they aren't the exact same model
They do this with everything. Same products just a unique product code for them so they don't go or price matches.
@Sergeant Salami: In this case the globes are actually different models. Used to be exactly the same which was good for even better prices if you were quick enough.
They do have them, just not showing on website.
$6.75each 😎
Thanks! Did you have to price match or have they already ticketed them? Off to Bunnings for me.
Price Match. Not reduced, 10% price beat.
Nice, too bad they don't have the 8W screw on sale.
Cool, ordered 4 of screw version.
Sounds like a plus vote
As usual filament LEDs are not included in the sale.
These aren't recommended for a closed down light?
Having 58 or so downlights makes a switch quite expensive :(
Only the ones with specific electronics can be enclosed. At this price though even if you got a 1 year out of them enclosed, you would still be ahead.
No lower wattage bulbs like last time :-( I was hoping to get 10. Scoured my local woolworths last time but couldn't find any
When it comes to quality LEDs, there is Philips and then there is the rest.
These are good value.
OSRAM are pretty good too.
Indeed. They would be my 2nd choice if the price was right.

Waiting for the 2000lm to be included.
Take a seat.
Are these dimmable? I am surprised most LEDs are not dimmable by default. I guess it is the electronics.
No, dimmable are a different model.
I'm guessing the electronics needed are not easy to integrate into a lightbulb cheaply
The other problem with dimming LEDs is that it shortens their lifespan - which is the opposite of incandescent
Bunnings Price beats by 10%

Wow, just ran some numbers as I wasn't sure LED bulbs stacked up vs compact fluro but….. (at 30c/kWh)
13W LED @ $7.50, Total Cost Ownership $66, 0.44c/hr
vs.
20W CF @ $6.50, TCO $54.50, 0.68c/hr
vs.
72W Incandescent @ $2.50, TCO $45.70, 2.28c/hr
I guess the only real question is are the stated typical run times realistic, I'm guessing that would be relatively regulated and therefore pretty accurate?
Think I better to rip out all my incandescent bulbs instead of waiting for them to die and replace slowly, those TCO stats suggest initial outlay is near inconsequential to TCO.
Edit: And yes I know I used TCO incorrectly for comparison as it is not normalised for lifespan.
Change the one you use the most and work backwards from there.
30c/kWh! I'm paying 13.3 + GST/kWh.
Still trying to switch to LEDs from the 35W EcoHalo downlights at home, but the Mrs isn't so keen - the "warm white" is still more white than the halogens, even though they both claim 3000K temperature.
There is also CRI to keep in mind. Under 90 and sometimes that's what puts people off, not so much the temperature.
Could be that, the CRI on these is 80 (https://www.philips.com.au/c-p/8718696571996/led-spot/specif…), but they're the only bright enough GU5.3 LEDs I can find (replacing 680lm halogen equivalents).
Any recommendations for something else that I could try?
Philips master LED down lights are what you want sir
Currently using https://www.philips.com.au/c-p/8718696571996/led-spot/specif… which was the only adequate Philips (or any other brand) that I could find. Don't recall seeing a "master" mentioned anywhere though, I'll have another look.
@elyobo: Tracked them down, the descriptions sound good, but the CRI is the same as the one I have and none of the GU 5.3 or GU 10 (if I felt like sinking more money in to it) are bright enough to replace 680lm halogens anyway.
Thanks for the suggestion!
To be honest, I had considered retrofitting my 12v downlights with led globes, but really it made much more sense to just replace them with full led fittings.
They are pretty cheap these days and put out much more light than any of the MR16 LEDs do and will probably last much longer.
Plus you don't have to worry about incompatible transformers (and if you have iron core transformers, you could be burning an extra 10w per light or more. Tested a 6W 12v led on elec trans, drew 6 to 7w, couple of iron cores I tested, was from 15 to 20w.) (edit: Sorry just saw you are using gu10 anyway)
Anyway, while they usually come flex and plug ready to plug in, of course if you don't have sockets up there, the sparky costs will blow out the budget. Still something to consider.
@bamzero: I may have been unclear, but we do have the GU5.3/MR16s. No idea what the transformers are on the Philips that I've got, didn't even realize that was a thing I needed to consider 😂
What sort of full LED fittings did you put in? Unsure about the implications of the switch (or even if I did, whether I could find an LED that would look good enough to keep the wife happy).
I replaced 10x 60w MR16 Halogen's with -
10x Philips Master LED MR16 5.5W GU5.3 12V AC 60D 580mA 3000K WARM WHITE ( Got them on an ebay sale )
They look great, they are awesome and i only needed to replace 2 of the transformers.
They cost me $8 each at bunnings.. The latest MR16 transformers for sale can scale down to the low wattage that these LED's run on .. the two old transformers that didn't work were making the Philips 5.5W MR15 LED's turn on and off every second like a slow Christmas light :)
@vid_ghost: Thanks, maybe I'll try them, although as far as I can see the lumen output is far less (420lm vs 680lm for my current light, which are Philips 35W "EcoHalo" bulbs). If you're replacing 60W halogens with them though, they must be similar. You didn't notice that they were dimmer?
I don't really understand about the transformers, I thought that the bulbs did that internally - I've just plugged in the ones I'm trying to my existing sockets and they seem fine.
I was worried about the 5.5W LED being less Lumens then the Halogen bulbs but because they are the same 60 degree directional beam they worked well and i didnt notice less light.. if anything they look to give me more light.. strange but true..
Buy one of them for testing.. that's what i did.
I think the stated Lumens on LED lights from manufacturer to manufacturer is misleading… got some 7w ebay M16 downlights with a stated 600ish lumens.. they dont even come close to the 5.5w Philips masters.
I have a mix. I started with some Robus ones, then got some cheaper ones online for other rooms.
Had them at least 3 years now and can't fault em so far.
They are like these but I have 10W ones (multiple in a room). Said to have Samsung 5630's in them, no doubt not the best binning but they are all consistent and I'm happy with the light.
Were $24 or something back then, even cheaper now $13.32 or cheaper in quantity and free shipping, though no mention of Samsung chips anymore.
Check the cutout size of your current lights, if they are 90mm then at least no cutting to do.
If you have surface sockets up there for each transformer, then it's just a matter of plugging in the new one.
If not, then either need to get them installed, or the new transformers could be wired directly like the current ones (not trying to advocate any DIY electrical here btw)
As far as the happy wife factor, I'll admit these don't look exactly the same as halogens, but once you get rid of them all and only see LED's, you get used to it pretty quick. Comparing them side by side is always go to be hard to please I think, and you're probably going to be paying big bucks to get a CRI over 90.
Wow just installed the 13w cool white, very powerful, amazing.
Bright but not that powerful
Just a quick tip: last time they were on sale I got my wife and I to get a raincheck each. They let you raincheck up to 6.
Grabed myself a 13W 1400 Lumens Globes are $7.50 warm white.. BTW they have 2000 Lumens Globes at half price too but they only come in cool white.
Not showing online?

So $12.25 each in store?
two sale TAG's under the 2000Lumens Phillips cool white globes were clear as day and marked correctly :) not online i guess.. must be in store only.
I think the price was $7.50 .. i will take a photo this afternoon if you want
Don't go out of your way. Wouldn't be the first time the sale tags were below the wrong item.
Still $25 at my local Woolworths, so assume the stock is on the wrong shelf at yours.
The 13W fits snugly into an IXL Tastic (those retaining clips…). Tried a Mirabella but no go as too short.
Loving these bulbs!
I have the 1400 lumens versions and they are excellent. Highly recommend it!
