Door Lock Missing Key, Code in The Handle to Replace?

I've got an old lock on a door that has never had a key. I opened the handle up today and there were some numbers in stamped inside. Would this be some kind of code for a locksmith to cut a new key by any chance? It requires one of those old fashioned type keys.

Here's a picture of the inside of the handle/lock

Thanks

        1) Photobucket sucks, shows an image just saying hotlinking disabled for your account please upgrade to premium

        2) You don't need an account to upload to imgur, here's your image - https://imgur.com/a/r2CZQ

        3) That number is just a part number for the plastic surround and has nothing to do with the actual lock.

        • Thanks for the info!

On my phone it was trying to force me to get an account or download the app.

      • OP, go to ozb's my account, view, files. Upload your pic there.

Looks like a euro cylinder. Can you take and post a picture of the cylinder/lock assembly? Can you take the cylinder out? (might be hard without the key)
If you can take the cylinder out, just replace it, that's the easiest simplest way.
    Something like this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/252306939557
You should measure it, and get one of the same length.

    • Ah damn. I'll have a look but I don't know if I can get it out easily as it's locked.

      Thanks for the info!

  • The handle seems to be part of the door… it looks as though I won't be able to replace it without some serious work.

    • oops, not a euro cylinder, an old school lock. try to pick it, remove it, then replace it?

      • Yeah, I'll give it a go. I've never tried picking a lock. I guess I just need some stiff wire?

    is that a metal door?

    • Yeah it's metal and glass. I might end up cutting it out with a multi tool and jigsaw with metal cutting blades, but don't really want to vibrate it too much.

Hey subywagon, I can shed some light on this (I am a locksmith). It is positively not a euro cylinder, the number you have in the picture doesn't refer to a key number at all. That picture is merely the door furniture.

However, some locks had the key number stamped on the lock body itself, not on the external furniture. Depending on the lock, near the keyway there may be a single letter (i.e. A, B, C etc), if there is, take a photo and take it to your local locksmith (not Bunnings or Mr Minute) and they should be able to get you a key from that. Other wise, you could just take the lock out and leave it with them for a little while and they can cut a key to the lock that way.

    • Thanks for the reply. unfortunately the door is locked with no key, so I can't get to the side of the lock in order to try and remove it. The best I can do is remove the door furniture which doesn't show much as per my picture above and again here: https://imgur.com/a/QvdTy

Looks like it could be a mortice lock, you could try pick it. See video (plenty of others out there too):

Once you've got it open it will be easy to replace. You can pick one up from Bunnings for $25, otherwise, assuming you can see a number/letter stamped on the lock body you could just get a new key cut as others have suggested.

    • Thanks china85. I didn't even think about trying to pick it. I'll give it a go later!
