Unable to Use Free Wi-Fi Hotspot Overseas on The iPhone X

Hello everyone.

I am hoping someone can help resolve this problem promptly.

Im in Singapore Changi Airport at the moment and they have free wifi in the transit hotel.

However, when I try and connect the wifi, the iphone fails to load up the authorisation login page. Running the internet doesn't show up the page nor waiting for the login to pop up some time soon.

I've tried resetting the network, force reboot, turning it off then on. Nothing works.

However, the laptop i'm using to type this thread up loaded it up no problems at all.

Can someone help me with this? Trying to contact my mum via WeChat that we have arrived safely.

Thank you in advance

Lol 1500 phone and already having problems.

    • lol tell me about it

      • The Apple sire says type in the URL manually.

After your phone has established a radio connection, enter the URL of a HTTP page, e.g. http://www.abc.net.au

Many hotspots fail to redirect to the authentication page when a HTTPS page is the first one requested. I usually have a bookmark that is a HTTP page handy for this.

It also happens with Android devices too, but perhaps iOS doesn't tell the user why so as not to scare them. On an Android device the result is usually Cannot establish a secure connection.

The reason this manoeuvre (and the one below of asking for 192.168.0.1) works is due what happens when during the HTTPS exchange. Say you ask for https://www.apple.com. Or equivalently, an app tries to connect to https://theappshome.com. The hotspot intercepts this. But what can the hotspot send back as a reply? It doesn't have the SSL cert of the desired site, so anything sent back, including a redirection to the login page, will be wrong.

If the hotspot just tunnelled the request this problem wouldn't arise. But this would be a loophole for users to get HTTPS services without logging in.

By asking for a HTTP site, the redirect of the hotspot will be accepted, and you can login.

Apparently there are standards being developed that will fix this irritation, but for now this is how most hotspots operate.

        • Some Android devices even when attempting to hit a non https site will generate a 400 bad request error

        • I should also add that recent Android releases try to forestall this problem by trying to establish a connection to a Google maintained HTTP site as soon as the WiFi connection has been established, to trigger the redirection. If that happens, a notification asks you to login to the hotspot. And the great advance since Kitkat (I think) is that it is done in a separate session and doesn't shutdown the mobile data session until Internet access is verified on WiFi.

  • Send mum an email using pc?

Sometimes mobile phones have this issue trying to connect to the authorisation page of free wiki networks.

No worries OP I'll tell your mum.

    • There will be a processing fee

      • … K I'll leave it on the nightstand.

(Sorry OP, you really set me up for this one!)

Trying to contact my mum via WeChat

Do you also use WhatsApp? There is a PC app for this which you can install, it works by scanning a QR code prompted on your laptop screen for your phone and then you can just use your laptop to message others

Edit: Same thing for WeChat too, just use this if you can't connect your phone to the wifi

  • Have you tried rebooting the phone? Have you tried a different wifi network?

Worst case scenario just send her a normal text???

  • shouldve just used a nokia 3310

Type in 192.168.0.1 in your browser, usually pops up after entering that address

  • bin it and wait for the iPhone XI.

    it comes with wifi!!

  • Sounds like a captive portal issue?
try hitting a non HTTPS site, such as cnn.com.
Some time you can get around it by hitting 1.1.1.1 before hitting the hotspot again.

If the issue persists, you may have to try different browsers.
