23"-24" Monitor for Reading Suggestions (Budget $500)

Hi all,

I am looking for a decent monitor up to $500 for my future desktop (temporary will be using it as a second screen connected to the laptop), mainly for a lot of reading and casual video watching.

Since the monitor will be 70-85cm away from the eyes, it seems to be reasonable to look at 23'-24" range (based on some recommendations). Not sure of the 'flicker free' claims, but any features reducing a stress on eyes will be essential. Also, the monitor must include height and tilt adjustments, be IPS, and with HD or higher resolution.

Your recommendations, based on the personal experience, will be highly appreciated.

Thanks

  • Are you looking at 1440p or 4k?

    • Anything that falls within the specified criteria, honestly. If there is no/minor price difference between 1440p and 4k, with all other parameters equal, the choice obviously will be 4k.

  • When it comes to video larger is nicer.

  • Not sure of the 'flicker free' claims, but any features reducing a stress on eyes will be essential.

Flicker free just means the monitor doesn't use PWM (pulse width modulation) which involves dimming the display via turning the backlight on and off rapidly (usually in the region of 80~100 times a second).

but most monitors nowadays are flicker free, regardless of whether they put in the 'flicker-free' claim or not.

If you need something with a good stand maybe look at Dell Ultrasharp series. P2417H or P2717H

If you want something good value / all rounder try the LG 24MB37PY-B as it only costs around $230 dollars. It ticks all your boxes too and I think is a better purchase over a Dell P2417H

    • Thanks, scrimshaw, for your recommendation. In regard to the 'flicker free' feature, I went to a electronic shop today and checked the monitors for flickering effects (placed the phone camera on them). Surprisingly, the monitors that didn't mention that feature on the stickers were flickering, regardless of the price and quality. I've also been recommended to look for a better resolution than HD for that budget. Thanks again.

  • For reading you want the highest resolution possible. I'm using a Dell 27" 4k and the text is so crisp it is like reading a printed page.

    • Thanks, thetrain, for the suggestion, but I am afraid it is a way out of my budget, and it doesn't seem to have a flicker free feature. Otherwise, I am sure it should be a brilliant monitor.
