ZTE AXON 7 $399 @ Officeworks (Australian Stock)

740

Officeworks is now stocking the ZTE Axon 7.

It's not listed on the website yet, and I had to pull teeth for a store to acknowledge it existed. Very limited stock so far.
I originally had a Gearbest order for $304(inc shipping), but they are yet to have stock one month later. I'd rather pay extra $90 for Australian stock, Officeworks Warranty, returns policy, can claim the GST.

WA: Joondalup has 2 Grey available
Jandakot & Fremantle supposedly also have stock, yet I was not able to get them to find it, but rather another officeworks looked it up.

Comes with Australian QuickCharge 3 charger.

    Dolby Atmos stereo speakers

    ..Sigh.

    • Assume that's a bad thing?

      • +16

I think he means that for Dolby Atmos to work correctly, there would need to be more than 2 speakers. Like saying you can get surround sound from a mono speaker.

        • +7

Basically Dolby Atmos is a processor that adapts the sound based on the room characteristics. It's not a surround sound technology although it can be used with surround sound. More speakers means more channels, but two channels obviously benefits from the technology enough that Dolby is willing to let the term be used for stereo mobile phone speakers.

          @supabrudda: Touché

        • @twocsies: Wikipedia says it can be applied to headphones, but I can't see any mention of horribly awful mobile phone speakers ;)

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolby_Atmos

    • Actually that is possibly with surround virtual sound. They have done it in the past and this could be the updated version as Dolby Atmos is now available in most headset and gaming console appz for headset.

Its not like your usual/normal Dolby Atmos home theatre amp but the dolby atmos headset virtual sound effect might sound like its coming from specific angle.

You have to experience it for console owners.

Joondalup WA has 3 gold and 2 grey left. I just bought a grey one and I am going to cancel my GB order.

    • Why? Wasn't GB almost $100 lower earlier? Is it worth just for the local warranty alone?

      • Yeah I think it’s worth it for local warranty plus GB keep pushing forward the shipping date . I bought mine almost 3 weeks ago and it still hasn’t shipped.

        • Same story for me. Extra $60 after gst claim for Australian stock.

        • I still haven't got the GB Axon7. I am wondering if I should cancel and get this instead…

      • +4

Negotiated with JB Hifi for $357.00 last Saturday. I'm not sure if that was only after I showed them the GB's USD 229 sale! They said they don't match online price but offered $357 as the best price ($399 sticker price now). I was going to go back on Monday for the phone but saw in my mailbox a random 28 degrees promotion of a $20.00 cashback on a $250 or more equivalent foreign currency transactions in month of November (sorry I didn't report that on OZB as it was targeted one). So I bit the bullet for $277.00 for the AXON 7.

GB is saying that they have already posted but I have my doubts. I am not in a hurry though and can wait.

No deal, your teeth are worth more than $399!

  • Does it have NFC?

    • +5

      Yes it has NFC.

Have been a happy Axon 7 owner after getting it at the start of the year for about $450 AUD from Amazon DE.

    Pros:
    - Great screen. High res enough to use it for Google Daydream.
    - Reasonably prompt firmware updates from ZTE.
    - Zippy! No complaints from running any apps.
    - Expandable memory/dual sim slot is great for me, especially as I use my DJI drone to sync images.
    - 4k video looks pretty darn good.
    - Can shoot RAW with the camera, so for daytime landscapes it's not bad at all.
    - QC3 is amazing. Getting the battery charged in 20 min has saved me countless times.

    Cons:
    - Non-backlit, non-feedback capacitive keys are really annoying to find in the dark.
    - Vibration feedback is a little too intense for typing feedback compared to my previous HTC m8. Turned it off.
    - Hard to fit a screen protector due to bevel curvature of the screen.
    - Plastic backing is quite soft and easily stratches/dents.
    - Camera isn't great in low light due to sensor's pixel density being too high.
    - Audio is only ok. My HTC m8 was better.

    • Thank you kind sir.

    • Thanks for your review! Helpful in deciding to wait for another device. Need a camera that is more reliable for good pics in lower light settings.

    • +2

Just wondering when you as "audio is only ok" are you talking about the loudspeakers?
Because I pitted them against the HTC M9 (same as M8) and it won hands-down (much clearer mids, and less distortion, slightly higher volume).
It was also better than the Nexus 6 (brief test) and the Nexus 6P (which was surprisingly okay).
The biggest loser was the Sony Z5… it could match the quality but nowhere near the total volume.

As far as I know, the ZTE Axon 7 is currently the best speaker phone (haven't compared to Razer Phone, obviously).
It's also one of the best headphone -phone, since its got a pretty beefy DAC. But there are other devices with great DACs, even the latest iPhones are vying for the top spot when it comes to the headset quality…. which makes it more ironic they killed the aux port.

PS… I think MobileVR (GearVR / Daydream / Standalone) are just gimmicks. They're cool to play for a little bit, but then the excitement fades… its night/day, not as immersive as VR Headsets from dedicated setups like the console / PC.

      • I should have clarified I meant the loudspeaker quality only being average, and probably favored my m8 because back in the day, I used an EQ on the HTC built into the music app I used. Now it's just Spotify I use on the Axon. So it wasn't a fair comparison.

Still, I personally think anyone who buys a phone for the loudspeaker is going to be disappointed with all the options. None of them sound good to me to play media with an acceptable fidelity.

In-ear, the Axon sounds great, though I'm not someone that invests in high quality headphones to really offer a (ahem) sound opinion on that.

        • Ok, that makes sense. Because its no surprise that the Axon 7 offers better speakers than the HTC M8 and M9.
And it offers much much better speakers than the HTC 10 and iPhone 8/8 Plus's (fake-)"stereo" speakers.

I don't care much for the loudspeaker.
However, occasionally, say once a week… I need to show off a video to someone, that's when it matters.
When its bottom or back firing, the sound loses a lot of volume, and the quality degrades as well. Not to mention, easily getting muffled by palms/hands.

On top of that, I like to prop the device up on a desk.
Here its very important to have a decent screen size (5 inches doesn't cut the mustard), a decent brightness (>300nits), and something to prop it up with like a built-in kickstand/case.

Also having front-firing speakers means the experience of games becomes much better, just think of something like GTA:SA, or Asphalt, or anything Emulation related. Otherwise, they will get muffled.

    • +1

What do you mean by plastic backing? The back of the phone is metal, even the top and bottom bits. The only plastic parts are the speaker grills

      • If it's metal, it's a very supple, plastic-feeling metal.

        • JerryRigEverything did a build test video on it and showed pretty much everything is plastic bar the speaker grills

    • If you didn't know there is an option in settings to make capacities keys vibrate on touch.

  • JB seem to have it for the same price. Officeworks only beat the price if it's lower right?

  • +5

    Re Cons..

I disagree with some of your points .. I have being using mine for 6 months and friends are jealous :-)

    • Buttons are not backlit but they are not that hard to work.. I'm half blind and I can work them. Conserves battery I suppose.
    • Supplied with a silicon case protector so hard to understand how back can become dented or scratched?
    • I disagree with your Audio comments.. It is stunning, clear and bright. Most reviews give it a big plus!
    • My case broke pretty quickly, and if any kind of dirt got under it, it would easily scratch the back. Audio is decent for a phone, though as I said, I feel my htc had more fidelity. Basically, if you want your phone to replace say a small portable speaker for music it certainly won't do that.

  • +1

This phone supposedly has the best sound through headphones

  • +2

    This or LG V20?

    Camera is important

    • +2

The V20 is undoubtedly better in lowlight, has better focus/img quality/audio recording. Plus it has a wide angle lens which the Axon7 doesn't have. Only thing I dislike on the v20 is the battery, it's slightly worse.

      • I have a V20, do no drive to upgrade, but I think the message is there are some great phones around, with all Australian bands, under $400 with Australian support. Doesn't make Xiaomis' as appealing anymore.

        • Which phones in particular are you referring to? Wondering on your preferences and which features you like?

Agree there are really good phones locally for under $400 with all Australian bands, but most are still missing one or two features that some might want such as no compass and LED notification on the Moto G5+, lack of dual sim both 3G/4G, micro sd slot ( or not hybrid ), high quality bright/Amoled screens, top camera, NFC, quality sound etc.

Many phones have some of these features, but need to pay more usually locally to be able to tick most of these boxes, and rare to get all or nine out of ten.

Have come close to pulling the trigger many times on a cheap Xiaomi Redmi Note3/4/4X/Mi A1 etc but lack of B28 has stopped me as for me that is a needed band for basic functionality in my area ( too late for the RN3 Kate as preferred a RN4 Kate but never happened, yet ).

Using a Moto G5+ and really like it, but would still not call it great as still missing a few features many other phone have.

          First world problems lol.

        • @ozhunter68: what is the importance of B28 again for phone usage?

I ended up going for a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X for the improved battery life (more efficient snapdragon 625 over 820 I believe but correct me if I am wrong and lower resolution 1080p screen so the 4000+ mAh battery should last long enough since I already have a decent 8.4" Huawei Mediapad M3 WiFi only tablet for everything else.. and I usually carry a bag with me at all times usually unless I am just going to a social event and not just idly solo alone commuting between places.

I have a vaya sim but will maybe getting a new Kogan or amaysim or other good deal prepaid phone plan at the end of the year when my current prepaid plan expires.

Are non B28 still usable? And is the Motorola Moto G5 Plus the only real decent phone with B28 in the sub $300 AUD category?

  • +1

Wont buy ZTE again since they don't really update their phones.

    • +1

Why do you say that? German ZTE updated the Axon 7 2 weeks ago.

      • +2

The Axon 7 is the exception.
I was following this device closely when it was rumoured and announced. It seemed like it would be better than the OnePlus 3, but with worse software. And lo and behold, those fears were true. However, ZTE has alleviated all of the software issues and has been quite well at updating it, almost as well as the 1+3. So between the two phones, the ZTE is definitely better.

I would say it was Phone of the Year 2016, just really good bang for buck.
It was too bad the Aussie Tax was atrocious on this model, and I had a perfectly reliable Nexus 5X at the time.
In 2017, the lack of ingress protection is tough pill to swallow next to the price-cut LG G6.

ZTE said they will follow up on it with a Axon 9 (I think they did a Axon 8 for China, which was really a Axon 7 Plus).
So let's see how they fare, hopefully they will wait until May 2019 and opt for the QSD 845 instead of the aging QSD 835.

        • Good points. I had a HTC M8, and the stereo speakers… and well it looks identical, that's why I went Axon over G6.

        • +6

          @vee124:

Yeah, I don't like the current trends in the smartphone world:

          • Price increases by US $100 across the board (even higher for iPhone X)
          • Less and less r00table, bootloader's locked, no kernel source or documentation
          • Increased fragility (curved edges, glass materials)
          • Dual-cameras which increase complexity, waste internal space, increase BOM… only to result in a worse camera performance
          • Weird 19:9 aspect ratio (letterboxing/space-wasting)
          • Less usable screen (cut-corners, poorly designed notches, accidental presses and sun-glare from curved sides)
          • Larger phone size (thanks to 6 inch behemoths)
          • Excessively high resolution (bad for GPU performance and battery life)
          • Decreased battery capacity (thanks Note 7!!!)
          • Less repairable (internal parts less standardised)
          • Weaker speakers (monospeakers, downward firing, just plain wrong)

There's just less stuff and more fluff. Guess that means higher profits from the populous, which are practically bipedal atm's with no brain or processing power.

        • +1

kernel source and rootable ….. the market for those users is probabaly less than 1% of buyers so manufacturers aren’t going to be concerned and will focus more on a phone for the other 99% of buyers in regards to OTA updates, security, etc.

depends what the drive to upgrade is …..if it’s an old phone and battery isn’t what it used to be or has a cracked screen then you need a new phone.

if it’s because you think newer hardware and speed will chnage your life ….. it probabaly won’t as it’s all about software and battery life,

there hasn’t been any “ disruptive” advances in smart phones in a long time, they have been incremental. which dappens the desire to spend.

heck my sons’ moto that was 3 years old got android 7, so why upgrade when i get all the features of a current OS.

        • +1

          @garage sale:

Spot on, agree with both you and Kangal alike.

I would say that a large part of population is happy with practical features in smartphones such as decent screen, cameras, OS upgrades, form factor and battery life. But for many it's the heavily marketed fancy features and fluff that entices people and nudges them over the line to upgrade and/or sign up to new contracts.

The profit margin in smartphones/tablets is really low ( unless you have high prices and market share of Apple and Samsung ), and there are many players in the market.

Putting top hardware in phones costs money, hence talking up the fluff lol.

        • @ozhunter68: this is mainly why I am skipping a lot of the gimmicky extra supernatural extraordinary features this year for a more power efficient but still high end basic phone.

I already have a powerful tablet to play awesome games and watch 2k videos on a nice 8+ inch screen.. so I just want a phone that can last me ages to just receive text messages and calls and the occasional Facebook message while still being able to listen to music on the train or maybe watch some pre downloaded background YouTube videos or Google play movie rentals.

Most games still don't require the latest and the greatest gpu's to actually run but actually the new PUBG android clones are really starting to push the limits on this.. some really great titles already starting to stress out my HiSilicon Kirin 950 SoC to its limits with noticeable lagging and depth of range limited.. these are mostly 3D style battle royale third person type shooters which mimic the real PC PUBG and other fps/60s style survival titles on PC.

Having said that most mid range phones with a snapdragon 625 or higher should not have a problem with this for many many more years to come but we shall see.

Mainly ram is the current bottleneck so 4gb minimum should be the new norm if you want your phone to last you awhile or 5 years minimum.

  • +1

Anyone use LineageOS? What is the battery life and camera quality on LOS?

  • this or HTC U Play? Both same price at Jb HiFi.

    • +2

HTC U Play is newer so it should receive more software updates.

      Axon has bigger battery
Axon has higher resolution and larger screen
      Axon supports google day dream
      Axon has a faster Processor
HTC does have better UI, and the skin is better in some respects.
      Both are dual sim
      Both support microsd
HTC camera is lower MP (20 vs 16) and can only record 1080p, compared to 4k.
      NO headphone jack on HTC

  • +1

Wife bought one from JB and got it home, started playing with it and realised that one of the stereo speakers was not working properly. Took it back to the store, exchanged for another new one. Opened it up in the store and tested it to avoid issues when getting home and it had further sound issues, with a constant buzz or crackling coming from the speakers.

In the end, she decided that she would be happy with the Oppo and it has worked for her so far.

    • I would have gotten OnePlus 5 when it was released few months ago. This phone is a one hella cracker phone.

      • Funny you should say that…I got myself the 8/128GB OP5 on the Australian soft launch. Loving most of it so far. Only things I don't like is the notification LED being so dull and trying to find a decent tempered glass screen protector for it.

  • -6

i would rather have a iPhone 6 with the same price

    • +2

But that is quite slow on today's standard…especially with iOS 11. At least go with iPhone 6S or iPhone SE if you don't mind smaller screen.

      • +1

I may have just got used to it but my iPhone 6 seems to work great on iOS 11. I wanted an se but work stopped buying in those and changed to 32gb iPhone 6 instead. Now I’m happy not to have an se because, really a 4” screen?

I do think the camera of the se would be good. But the old 8mp ain’t bad.

The specs on an old iPhone 6 is nothing on this zte beast.

    • +1

They previously removed the listing. Looks like they put it back up in the last few days.

  • Update: Just with my luck my Axon 7 is having problems. If anyone knows how to fix the battery being stuck at 50% after i restarted it once. Proof: https://i.imgur.com/1JsJKJp.jpg

  • Looking forward to the ZTE Axon M. Dual displays!!!!

  • -1

a 3250mAH battery life would be not justifiable for a sub-$400 price mark, in my opinion, there's better phones like the Chinese brands on banggood/gearbest/zapals, etc. that will give you a better run for your money.

    • Pretty much no warranty with those stores.

  • +1

    Same price at jb?https://www.jbhifi.com.au/phones/Outright-Mobile-Handsets/zte/zte-axon-7-gold/333822/

  • This vs the Motorola G5S plus? Going for roughly $390 via coupon on TGG online. I know this has a higher res screen but that means battery life would be worse. How do the cameras compare? Dual camera vs single?

    • +1

Moto does have smaller battery. Not sure about Moto, but axon has a pretty bad camera. Moto is going to get Oreo and more updates, cant say the same about Axon.

      • Did you fix that 50% battery issue then? If not, maybe just keep using it til it runs flat and give it a full charge before turning back on and fingers crossed just a software stuck/bug.

        • +1

Unfortunately no. I did try running to flat and to full but it didnt help. Now the phone doesn't start at all and after the boot-screen shuts down again. Online everyone says its hardware fault hopefully there's still one grey phone left at officeworks, I don't really want gold.

        • @vee124:

Update for anyone who's interested…. Just swapped with a new one at OW.

    • +1

I would definitely get the ZTE. It has more powerful hardware, a better screen and better camera (low-light performance is so-so but probably still better than the G5S Plus). The dual cameras on the G5S are gimmicks at best and picture quality in some cases is actually worse than the original G5 Plus. The only area where the Motorola wins out is battery life due to having a less power-hungry and more efficient processor. For roughly the same price it's a no-brainer in my opinion.

      • Does the ZTE advertised above have vanilla Android? I am looking for a phone with "pure Android" and was favouring the Motorola G5S plus until I read your post. The other phone I was considering is the new Huawei Nova 21.
As you are more knowledgeable than me, I would be grateful for an informed opinion.

        • +1

ZTE use a skin called MiFavor UI which as I understand falls somewhere between stock and bloated skins such as Samsung. Motorola is far closer to stock as the only feature they add is their Moto app (for configuring gestures, etc…). Huawei use a skin called EMUI which copped a lot of flak in it's early years but has become much better in recent times.

A quick look at the Huawei shows a promising device, but reviews say it falls a bit in performance and low-light camera photography (a common fault in this price range). I don't know how much it retails for but I'd probably still get the ZTE.

        • +1

Honestly, it feels stock to me. Sure settings are not stock but if you use a launcher like Nova Launcher, use google's stock apps it gets pretty close to stock.

        • @dqtl74:
          Thank you dqtl74.

        • @vee124:
          Thank you vee124.

  • How is ZTE UI looks like? Close to Moto G5?

    • UI is nice, coming from HTC I really like it. I use Nova launcher so i'm not sure how the stock launcher is.

  • +1

If you can find a JB with stock, they're trying to get rid of this phone. I was able to get it down to $357 same as someone who posted above. I also had a $10 gift card so all up I got it for $347. If you have gift cards for JB lying around this might be something to try.

Even better if you're going overseas. Claim TRS and you can get a great phone for just over $300. For the money, nothing comes close.

    • Which store? Did they have the grey or gold?

      • Bankstown. They only stock gold I believe.

        • Any chance of posting your receipt, I hope they still have stock

        • @psychatok: Sure thing, here you go: https://i.imgur.com/idqu7A9.jpg

The blanked out part is just the phone's IMEI. Good luck!

        • @dqtl74: thank you for your post. I was able to get one from JB for $360.

          Cheers.

    • Seems to be no chance of JB Hifi stock, and no sign of Officeworks either at the moment.

        • Thanks for that. It's amazing they don't have their stock tracking all in sync store/website/online ordering. How can you run a store where the best way of checking if you have it is to look on the shelf?

  • This at $399, or wait for a grey market LG G6 to hopefully dip back to below $500.

Is the G6 substantially better to be worth the extra $100, hassles with grey market stock, plus the wait?

Tried a couple officeworks. They have them on stock in their system but not any demo models out on display.

    • Personal preference.

For me I value warranty, and OW is the best you can get in terms of replacements and refunds.
I value front facing speakers so axon was best for me.

      • I like the idea of up to date stock android, so would probably root the ZTE. Can't do that with the G6. Also like the idea of AMOLED screen.
But the G6 is a nicer form factor and a 2017 flagship. I assume the camera is a lot better in the LG as well.

Do you know if there is much real world performance difference between the two? I can't find any benchmark results.

        • I have both (but the Axon 7 is unopened right now), I might have a play around with it later in the week and get back to you. Honestly I'm not expecting too much difference between them performance-wise. My mum uses the G6 and at times it feels faster than my S8+ (probably due to her not being as heavy a user as I am).

The G6 also has the quad DAC but in all honesty you need a good pair of in-ears or headphones to really take advantage of it. I found very little difference using my Xiaomi Pistons. As far as the screen goes, I've always found LCD screens on a phone to still be perfectly adequate but this is a personal preference thing.

About the form factor, the G6 doesn't seem to adapt apps to the 18:9 ratio as well the S8/+ does. Many apps have the software buttons always shown on one side or if it's hidden, there's just a black gap where it should be and the app itself is off-centre. The Axon 7 being the classic 16:9 ratio won't have this problem. But there is a large push towards 18:9 as the standard screen ratio in the future (the G6 will probably be obsolete once this is the case though).

If it were me, the $150 difference (see my post above) would be worth the trade-off.

        • @dqtl74:

The Axon 7 has an extremely powerful headphone jack as well. Coming from HTC LCD screen, I can't believe how good AMOLED is. The colours are so much nicer and the blacks are perfect.

  • +1

Just bought one at officeworks Russell Street Vic

Ask some one for help as it's no longer on display
