Navigon GPS software Free for Australian Galaxy S running Android 2.2 (Froyo)

140

This is most likely a mistake that will be fixed at some stage. So far this has only worked for Android 2.2 flashed Galaxy S phones.
If you have another model or haven't flashed your Galaxy S, don't bother reading further.

As listed in Whirlpool here, http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1573664

My Galaxy is running Doc Kalpik 7.6.2 JPO firmware ( available here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817703) which is surprisingly painless to install and running great!

The Navigon App appears in the Market as a Free App, I think this a bug in the Market probably because the Samsung Galaxy Tab (which officially has Navigon as a Free App in Australia) is so similar to the Galaxy S and is the only Samsung device currently (officially) running 2.2 in Australia.

It doesn't appear free in Appbrain, nor does it seem to work for Non-Samsung phones.

  • Not bad, especially if Optus gives us Froyo on Monday.

    • I doubt it'll still be free by then. I suspect this is a mistake.
If you're keen, the Doc Kalpik ROM linked above is actually really easy to install (no need for a computer) and is running like a dream for me.
with Titanium Backup it didn't even take all that long to regain all my old settings either.

  • Coming from a stock Galaxy S, it downloaded and installed but wouldn't run as its the wrong device.

    • Yeah, you need 2.2.

Galaxy S runs 2.1 at the moment.
Optus (and Virgin) Galaxy S owners will get an update on Monday, assuming they don't delay the release again! Other carriers haven't announced release dates for their versions of the Official 2.2 update yet (to my knowledge).

My phone was a Virgin model. The app definitely runs and prompts me to start downloading maps.

      • Ah I see, it is also a Virgin model. The phone is my brother's so I know nothing about the android.

But if I was to try out that ROM you linked, does it need to be rooted or anything first? I'm a little confused with the instructions on the link.

I'm more used to flashing ROMs on winmo 6.5.

        • With Froyo coming very soon, I wouldn't try rooting the phone and installing another rom unless you are sure with what you are doing.

Yeah, phone needs to be rooted.
I agree the instructions are daunting, there's a lot of steps.. Mostly they're backup steps just in case something goes horribly wrong.

Assuming the phone meets the Prequisites:
          1) Make sure you have the 3 Button Recovery Mode
          2) Make sure you have 2e recovery (shows up as 2e at the top of screen)
          3) disable any lagfix you might have installed.

The Backup stage boils down to:
          1) Backup you IMEI (involves installing a terminal App from the market and typing in the code listed here http://androidforums.com/1367506-post928.html)
          2) Root the phone (Ryanza's OCLF from the Market is what I used), reboot with 3 Button Recovery and Install update.zip, then restart. The phone should be rooted, you can check with the OCLF application.
          3) install ROM Manager from the Market.
          4) Install ClockworkMod from ROM Manager
          5) Perform a Backup in ROM Manager. (takes 30-odd minutes)
          6) Install Titanium Backup from the Market
          7) Backup all System Settings and Apps (takes 30 to 60-odd minutes depeding on how many Apps you have)
          8) move and rename the clockworkmod recovery file from the clockworkmd folder to “update.zip” in the root of the Internal SDcard, this will overwrite the OCLF update.zip which is OK, it's done its job.
          9) Do a Factory Reset (from the Privacy Menu in Settings)

Then follow the Installation Instructions from the Link from Step 5..
The actual flashing bit takes only 10 minutes or so (probably less)

Once flashed and restarted, install Titanium Backup again and restore all System Settings and Apps from before… this is kinda annoying cause you have to select OK to install each and every App. Took me 30 minutes or so.

        • Cheers! You've been great help!

      • Will my phone work after all the steps scubacoles mentioned :-| ?

        • everyone else's has on the Whirlpool thread…

      • Hey sorry to be off-topic, but where can I get the stock international firmware for it?

I've scoured the net for a stock version of the international i9000 Froyo firmware but to no avail.

I've been checking samfirmware daily but to no avail =(

        • No idea sorry… I'd have thought sammyfirmware or whatever the site is called would be the place to look too.

  • Downloaded and running perfectly!! Great find!!

  • tested, not working with htc desire hd

  • not working with N1

  • works perfectly on sgs. just download it from the market.

are you on froyo or eclair on the sgs?

  • Wouldn't this work on other models if the Galaxy S market fingerprint is used (modify /system/build.prop).
    I'll try it later.

  • why does it ask for permission to make phone calls and take pictures?

    • +1

I think it wants to take pictures of your GF and upload them to the internet.
