Given that an average a person sleeps for 8 hours in a day, that means that an average person will sleep for 229,961 hours in their lifetime or basically one third of their life. I'd say $900 is a pretty decent investment…

      • I am due for a new mattress but really don't want to spend close to $900, I'm cheap and so is my comfort lol

For a limited time my arse. The upsize offer seems to be always going on. Walked into one store in September with the signs up all over the place. You will be hard pressed to walk into any mattress shop where a sale is not going on, whether it be a birthday sale, spring sale, back care sale, sleep sale… no one sells at RRP. RRP is a joke too. Try ringing around Harvey Norman stores getting a price on the exact same mattress and you will not only be quoted different best prices but different RRP.

Furthermore, as everyone knows, they make it inherently difficult to compare beds from the same manufacturer across major bedding retailers. The industry is simply shady.

Removing competition from the sales experience lets retailers price gouge shoppers. They're able to charge mark-ups as high as 200% – and this is before they receive a 'rebate' from the mattress maker.

I spent way too much time looking for a new mattress over the last couple of months. I wanted a bargain under $1000 but also wanted something that will last. With the shady pricing structure, that was almost impossible. Looking at reviews (or lack thereof) just got me more confused. So I was left with taking a punt pretty much. The 'bed in a box' with its 100+ nights policy is certainly a great addition to the industry. I tried one brand but found it not right for me. I was going to keep trying another but I think I was just over the whole mattress thing.

I ended up going back to Harvey's, picking a mattress I liked the 20 second feel of (while the staff member hovered over me) and after ringing around all stores to gauge the best price I could haggle it down for, went into a VIP night they had going and got it for slightly cheaper than the best I could get previously. Split the payment over two amex cards with this deal helped pretend I was getting something close to a bargain. Getting it home and testing it, I wonder how different it would be and hold up to the $650 Eva queen deal going at the moment.

I suggest for those with time, don't be put off by the different model names given to the same brand of mattress between stores. Try and find what they are made out of. Usually they call their springs or foam types (for example) the same thing (eg. miracoil advance spring® or EvoFoam®) and just change the fabric colour/pattern.

Looking at the mattresses at Forty Winks, I can identify my mattress I bought at Harvey's (same insides/different fabric pattern). They have it slightly higher than the price I paid except I got the amex offer to bring it down cheaper.
