New PC Build Mini ITX - Phanteks Enthoo Evolv Shift

Hi all, I have decided I need a PC as back up for my Razer Blade Stealth as I work from home and it is a bit risky just having the one laptop for all my work. I would probably end up using the PC as the main driver for my work but want to be able to play games on it too.

I really like Mini ITX builds and want to use this case, Phanteks Enthoo Evolv Shift, but finding it hard to see a completed build for under $1,500 (ideally closer to $1,000). My original plan was the HP Wave or Samsung ArtPc, something nice for the desk but some of the specs for them are not great.

I am not too concerned with 4k/ VR, I have an ultrawide 1440p monitor so it would be nice to run games at that resolution. Something like Battlefront 2 or PUBG.

Last time I built a PC was in 2012 and I sold that last year, was way too big for my home office… I have watched youtube videos and read forums and see GPUs are high priced because of Crypto mining, is this correct? My last GPU was a GTX670.

I don't mind AMD or Intel builds just want something with 16GB ram, 500GB SSD only. i5 should be fine, or whatever the AMD version is. Given this is mainly for work (MS word/ excel) using 'last gen' GPU or CPU should be ok for me to keep the price down, not looking to build a beast. Ideally $1,000

I will need AC wifi (might end up getting a LAN cable though) and Bluetooth too.

Thought I'd throw the question up on here, thanks

  • Wait if you can. Why?
    - RAM prices high (flash supply reduced)
    - SSD prices high (flash supply low)
    - GPU prices high (miners)
    - CPU prices high (low-avail Intel 8th-gen)
    - Motherboard prices high (for Intel's 8th-gen)

You will build a AU$1,900 PC in late 2017, what would've cost you AU$1,100 in mid 2016.
Not sure if mid 2018 will drop back down to normal 2016 levels, however, over time we are supposed to get cheaper.
So its possible that similar setup could cost around AU$1,000 in (mid ?) 2018.

As it stands today, your AU$1,000 won't get you very far.
You can buy a console instead, or a Cheap PC instead ($200 Dell Optiplex SFF, throw in a cheap SSD and used 750Ti)

Unless you can get your hands on a time machine, this information isn't very useful today.

The same can be said for the property market, yet people are still buying house & land every day, regardless of what they were priced at in the 60s/70s.

No it won't unfortunately, therefore OP should lower their expected build specs, or continue to save up until they can afford what they're really after.

OP, if you could stretch your budget, you can get a pre-built Dell Ryzen system for ~$1,200 which will satisfy your needs.

  • Thanks for the comments.

I really just need a new PC for work and I would probably play games for 1 week then not again for like a month. So I'm thinking I don't need a great GPU.

That Dell build is really good value, I have been checking the parts and it is basically what I could build it for… My main thing against it is the case. I want this Evolv shift case to look nice on my desk.

I currently have a razer blade stealth which is 8GB, i7 and 128GB. It works well for what I need.

I have been reading that the Ryzen 3 has the same sort of power as an i5, does that sound right? The price is $165 for Ryzen 3 and the Price for Ryzen 5 1500x is $249. Should I be going for the ryzen 5? intel i5 is $235.

This is where I am at.

Phanteks Enthoo Evolv Shift iTX Case Tempered Glass Black
Corsair SF450 450W SFX 80 Plus Gold Power Supply
AMD Ryzen 3 1300X Processor with Wraith Stealth
    Gigabyte AB350N-GAMING-WIFI ITX Motherboard
    Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK8GX4M1A2400C14 8GB (1x8GB) DDR4
    Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M.2 250GB SSD
    $922

Ideally I want to be able to update the RAM to 16GB in the future as well as more storage. But mostly I have everything on the cloud, just need for dropbox sync/ google drive.

    Thoughts on the motherbord?

R5 1500/1600 are the AMD i5 equivalent, it really depends on whether you want to overclock or not.
