    Retro Tech

    "CD & DVD Storage case"
    DAB+ FM Radio with Bluetooth

    ?

    • +1

      Definitely not Future tech

    • Not sure the reason for all the down-votes.

"Retro" is generally speaking style or fashion from the recent past.

To my knowledge CD&DVD Storage cases were never Stylish or Fashionable.

  • +2

Insane price for a 4K TV this size. Not saying it is good nor bad but the price is just nuts.

    • -5

      probably only 1 per store…

      • +3

Not sure why you were negged to oblivion? I wouldn't expect this to be in stock at any Aldi near me. Certainly not going to cancel my Kogan pre-order to chance saving 10%

Not sure why you were negged to oblivion?

Lots of Aldi employees on OzBargain.

        • -1

          @jv:

          That explains all the upvotes.

      • +3

Or 0 per store if you're in Perth.

    • +2

Is it really though? Kogan has this for $50 more and it's a smart tv. Maybe I'm missing something though.

      • +5

        Also add delivery.

If you're not happy with it you can return within 60 days at Aldi.

      • +2

This one appears to have HDMI-ARC, which could benefit some out there.
That and the 60 day return policy is also helpful.

        • What's HDMI-ARC used for? Karaoke?

        • +2

@Aulyna: audio return channel. you'd plug your bluray surround sound combo thru it. Enables audio from tv and other devices to return to the surround sound.

      • +3

I didn't mean compared to the current market prices. I mean in general how cheap this stuff has become compared to just a few years ago

      • +1

Cheap smart TVs are usually very laggy and have high input lag so not suitable for gaming. that's just my experience, better off getting a "dumb tv" with Chromecast imo.

        • +5

+1. I don't get the big deal about Smart TVs tbh.

Give me a cheap HTPC, a wireless keyboard and mouse + Dumb TV over a PITA input-letter-by-letter-using-the-remote "Smart" TV anyday!

        • @montorola: Agreed. Used my LG Smart TV at first because of the free movies, but never since. Android box is pretty much on whenever the TV is these days.

Comments on the TV please if people have it. Reading on whirlpool and product review, its hit or miss…

    • +4

I bought the 65" in Sep 2017. You need to adjust it according to the whirlpool thread (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2565368) and the image quality is excellent for 4K contents (compared to price). Out of the box without any adjustment, the image quality is not so good.

For Free to Air TV, the image quality is average as you are watching lower quality broadcast (maximum 1080i) on a 65" TV.

Also, the sound is tinny and you'd definitely need soundbar or speakers.

Overall, I am very happy with the quality for the money I spent.

    • +3

I purchased one during the last offer with a chromecast HD. For the price, very happy. Everything is fine and no-frills, just not amazing. In perspective, spending $500 on a computer monitor is a no-brainer for me, while spending $1k+ on a TV just doesn't make sense.

We use Kodi on an RPi3 and the chromecast HD almost exclusively and everything looks fine. No issues with the menus or remote but all we really use them for is changing HDMI sources.

It did make it pretty obvious that all my lowly encoded (700mb) movies look like garbage which wasn't nearly as noticeable on the old TV so there's that. Sports, mostly EPL, look OK streaming (optus) and quite good on SBS HD.

Can't comment on the sound because we've used external speakers since day 1.

Overall, I've had no regrets and been very happy.

      • How does the quality look like on higher encoded movies (1-2GB)?

      • Geez with 700mb encoded movies you might have use for that CD storage unit they have. That is pretty retro.

I bought the 65" 12 months ago and I actually thought it was pretty awful.

Image quality was poor and the backlight had to be turned right down in the service menu but was still bad. I tried to play about with settings but everything was hit and miss. This was my first non-plasma TV though.

Thankfully it developed a fault after 360 days so I returned and got a refund.

    I wouldn't buy one again.

That said, I never tried a 4K source but if you plan on normal usage (eg tv, streaming, even gaming) then ensure you test it and return within your 60 day satisfaction guarantee.

    • is that the same one as reviewed/tested here? https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2016/09/is-aldis-799-65-inch-4k-t…

      • +3

        That is the one…

The panel on mine was Samsung (I checked via the fgiant whirlpool thread which is worth a read) so I thought it would be good.
The backlight issue (strips down the screen and bleed around the corners) is less obvious if you are further back and perhaps I was unlucky.
If you are just using it for gaming (as I was for 99% of the time) then I could tolerate it. I was relieved to get my money back to be honest though.

The best thing to do is buy it and try it. Compare with another TV and ensure that you try different sources , not just a 4K youtube video.

        • Good advice, cheers.

        • @bullettime:

I think that it literally comes down to whether this is for 4K or not. If you intend to use it for 4K (eg new Xbox / PS4 then this is definitely justifiableas as a bargain purchase).

However, if that is your primary purpose then I would stick with a better brand.

I look at it like buying a used car. A new car never stays new but a quality car is always quality. You could pick up a decent used set for that price.

I would also have concerns that Bauhn is more likely to fail outside of the warranty period which will give you a headache.

    • +1

To be fair, just how much did you expect from such a cheaply-priced telly?
Could you get a better one for anywhere near that price? Almost certainly not unless a clearance item.

We were bought a 48" 4K unit for Christmas a couple of years back - $600. We returned it as the fascia at the top edge of the screen was loose and the backlight was bleeding through. The "Smart" claims were a bit dubious too.
We tried it for a couple of weeks: my wife thought it looked okay, but I wasn't especially keen on it though it did grow on me. But switching back to our existing 10 year-old 32" Sony Bravia LCD was instantly better.

I looked then at how much a new tv would cost and couldn't find a decent 32" for that price even in the January sales.
Since then, the price has dropped to about $400!

They might not be the best tellies, but I don't think you can beat the quality for the price. You just have to accept that they are a cheap product.

      • Exactly..
I didn't expect much but I also read the review liked above and it gave me confidence.
I theb purchased after nagging the wife for an early Xmas present and then told myself that it wasn't as bad as it was.
Realisation set in after Xmas when it was too late to return.

I'd buy a better brand next time.

        • +1

And the lesson is…always listen to your wife.

  • +1

the lines will be intense for that TV

    • I got one at 11.30am and there was still 1 more there.

  • dont forget the amazing noise cancelling headphones that they are selling to compete with the bose qc35!! lol

    • The green cans that sound like an AM radio?

  • Do these TVs have 10 bit colour? Probably not for this price. Won't be long before everything does so worth a check ;)

    • No HDR. No 10 bit.

Got this dogalogue yesterday. Ratchet secateurs and lawn edger both very tempting.

    • +1

FWIW the ratchet secateurs are SENSATIONAL - used them craploads in getting an overgrown garden on the property we bought back into shape - top quality and save you loads of effort (as most stuff they cut your next best option is either a chainsaw or handsaw).

      • Sensational feedback, thanks. I figured for a couple bucks it won't hurt to have a few more secateurs in the yard, but if they're actually good, then you beauty.

        • Rest assured they're AWESOME - one of the best handtools I've purchased by far.

  • +1

I bought the 49" Braun 4K TV from last week. Quite a good tv for the price. Takes a while to turn on and the contrast ratio isn't amazing but the picture and colour looks great.

  • +3

I am in the market for a new lawn mower. Does anyone know if the Aldi one is any good?

    • I'm after one unit too, but not sure how's the quality of aldi

    • I bought the $100 electric (corded) one about a year ago. It has served me reasonably well but if you have more than a very small patch of grass you'll find yourself emptying the catcher very frequently.

Even though the ALDI mower is still working I'm in the process of switching to an alternative (second hand four stroke mower), mostly due to the inconvenience of the cord—it made mowing really quite cumbersome—but also partly due to the small catcher on the electric.

      Hope this helps…

    • IMHO it's probably reasonable IF you've only got a $350 budget but with most small engine tools unless you're very fastidious with your maintenance the cheaper stuff tends to be much more of a PITA to start/use and where a more expensive mower is still working well in 5yrs, the $350 is on death's door after 3-4yrs.

I suspect it'll have a lot of bits that're plastic where metal should have been used and spare parts won't be easy to find (e.g the self-propel unit needs replacing). They put a branded engine on it (though B&S has umteen different lines so can't read much into that) but I reckon a lot of the rest of it will be very dodgy and likely prone to clogging, rust etc.

3yr warranty is nice BUT thats only on mechanical failure and I'll bet the 3rd party that manages this will be REALLY strict on user error, poor servicing etc - I know I would be as most people stuff their small engines up by poor usage habits.

Personally if I only had $350 to spend I'd be a good 2nd hand branded quality unit from Gumtree or if I had more to spend I'd stretch for something better.

Sure you can use and take back within 60 days if you like but lumping a used mower back to an Aldi isn't going to be much fun.

    • Aldi released a similar model (21" self propelled, b&s motor) a few years ago, I picked up a second hand one from scumtree expecting it to be quite lacklustre, but it really hasn't missed a beat. I think for this size deck and self propelled, you'd want something a bit more powerful.

Construction wise, I suspect it only has a single blade, I like 4. I don't use my catcher, mainly because it's flimsy plastic and attaches without and levers or hooks. All in all, a good machine, but personally wouldn't pay $349 for it.

  • Whats the input lag on these? Ok for xbox X?

  • I don't get why people are buying 4K TVs if it would take days to actually download 4K content?

    • +6

oh, you must be on the NBN ;)

      • +3

        FTTN spotted

      • FTTH says hello ;)

    • +2

You really don't have a choice anymore when buying anything above 40 inch. Anything decent will automatically be a 4k smart tv.

But you're right. 99% of people aren't even watching 4k content.

      • That says how bad is our internet speed behind the rest of the world.

        • People actually stream 4K?

Yes, the USA has always been far ahead of us with their internet speeds and data so not overly surprised. I assume Blu-Ray was future-proof enough to be used for the 4K physical medium.

  • This one has a nice price. Got one yesterday. Hit/miss around stores as it’s clearance

    Bauhn TVs are generally horrid.
Massive input lag for the games too
Save a little more and go a Samsung

    • +1

Ok please define a little more. A few dollars or tens of dollars?

    • +1

A little more? $449 vs $1287 (cheapest Samsung 55 inch on the market)

  • sweet $10 havaianas

  • Wish they'd put out a less ludicrously sized TV.

Need one between 32 and 40 inches so it'll fit where my current DSE one is. But it either needs to be smart or have ARC.

And, y'know, be cheap. Haha. Not having any luck.

  • Does this tv have chroma subsampling 4:4:4 for pc monitor usage so you don't get blurry text?

  • In people’s previous experiences what are stock levels like around Southside Brisbane QLD stores? I’m planning on going to the store nice and early in the minting before they open. But just don’t want to miss out by going to the wrong branch as there’s a few Aldi stores around me.

    Thanks :)

    • +1

      What item are you after?

      • Sorry forgot to mention - the tv!

        • Be there 1/2 hr before opening time

@Regie69: Sure, will go early. Just contemplating which store to go to - Underwood or Garden City?

        • @Regie69: I got one about 11.30am.

  • Where is the mower in the catalogue/website?

    • +1

It's not up yet as it's on Saturday the 18th

      • Okay I'll wait for the website, just doesn't appear in the physical catalogue

        • Mower is on sale already.

        • @Regie69: thanks for the heads up

Aldi TV update - my store (Seaford, SA) had approx 10-12 units … 5 or so on display, the same by the back room doorway. Arrived at 8:00am, about half a dozen people outside waiting, joking as each additional car / van / ute pulled into the carpark. By 8:30am, there were 30+ people queued up… unless they had more stashed out the back, there'll be a lot of disappointed people by now!

It is disgusting how Aldi continue to get away with this type of crap - advertise something at a stupidly cheap price, but only give each store X units of stock, which sell out within a hour of the first morning on sale. Surely they'd get a better deal if they doubled or tripled their TV order - it's not like they'd be left with any stock after a few days, and if anything they'd have a lot more happier customers - and less pissed because they missed out. I'd say the ACCC should do something, but they're as useless as tits on a bull.

    • +1

      did you get one?

      • +1

        Sure did :)

    • Target, Kmart, Big W, Officeworks etc. all do it (or have done) so Aldi would not be alone on that score.

Maybe as costs of living and unemployment go up in SA (even if the people building houses Seaford Heights are all well-to-do) the demand for cheap items will be greater.

      • amazing the demographics and market forces. In Canberra, these things stay in Aldi stores for ever. Ocassionally, I see someone carting one out but very little demand for these.

    • It's a major part of Aldi's marketing strategy where ever they are. Sell limited quantity of cheap gear of often dubious quality. Get the punters in the door & get them buying without thinking too much.
      It worked on you.

  • +1

Got one from Monbulk this morning. Pretty impressed so far. Don't notice any input lag with the Xbox One, but I may not be as sensitive as others but I do game a lot. Its pretty bright also, it is replacing a Panasonic Plasma which I have always been impressed with.

Looking forward to spending a bit more like with it, it is only going to be used with an Xbox and a Switch, so won't be able to offer advice on Foxtel or FTA performance.

  • 5 TVs at Drewvale QLD 9:46am

  • Picked one up this morning to replace the bedroom tv which had a faulty HDMI ARC port. Retailer couldn’t fix/replace so they’re refunding and thought this was a good replacement. There was a line for it and managed to grab one.

Definitely great value for money. We have the 65” as well in the rumpus room which has been great for movie nights.

For $449, you’d be pretty happy with the quality

  • Just picked one up.

Has anyone else found the remote to be really shit? I usually have to press the button I want upwards of 3 times for it to register.
I've switched out the batteries too.

    Other than that, looks decent.

    • Yeah, I've found that too - the range on the remote sucks, and if its not pointing directly at the blue LED on the TV, it doesn't work :( Only other thing I'd complain about is the time it takes to turn on, and the awful sound (but thats not surprising). Still, bargain at $449.

  • Staff at local Aldi have copped criticism over the TV. General quality, poor sound, poor images when upscaling of SD TV images to 4k (predictable), etc

    • It's a $449 TV, some people need to keep their expectations in check or pay more for a better brand.
