Online Payments - Who Do You Use

I dont have PayPal and have read a few negative comments so I wonder what options are there for online payments.
This is for a payment to my daughter for clothing sold on facebook.

Mastercard, Visa, American Express and PayPal

All offer various degrees of protection when making on-line payments, that say a direct credit of funds doesn't.

  • Amex, PayPal, Mastercard, been using all 3 for like 15 years.

  • Depends on what payment options the website offers?

For paying others or for receiving payment?

Paypal for paying others, almost hands-down. Register an account if you don't have one, it's fairly easy and especially on eBay, come with a lot of buyer protections you won't find elsewhere, even with credit cards. All of Paypal's horror stories are of Paypal screwing over vendors receiving money, which on the flipside means if you're a buyer and paying, Paypal is decent.

If not Paypal, then any any CREDIT card, because all credit cards come with chargeback facilities. Obviously if you can swing it, a credit card with purchase insurance and/or price protection is better but to me, non-essential. Never use bank transfer or direct deposit, I wouldn't even use a debit card if I can help it.

Receiving payment - you want the opposite: Bank transfer or at worst credit card. Never receive money by Paypal if you can help it, because 11 times out of 10 Paypal will screw over the vendor to help the purchaser.

    • All of Paypal's horror stories are of Paypal screwing over vendors receiving money

No, not all. PayPal are in my opinion fairly unscrupulous, in that they will ask for very little information to get you signed up. Any small thing can trigger them into locking down your account at a much later date, and asking for very detailed personal information that might have otherwise made you think twice about signing up in the first place. In that case, it will be too late, and you may have to go through a rather painful process to get any money released.

      • I can only speak from personal experience but paypal has never given me any grief, and I've used it to pay others for decades now.

And as to providing personal information - given the only other methods are credit card or bank transfer (or cheque), you'd be giving much more information to open any of those accounts so again, to me it doesn't really register as an issue.

Obviously again I'm speaking as someone who's only used paypal as a buyer, so if you buy AND sell, your mileage may vary.

what are the negative comments about paypal? There are negative comments for every payment service out there.
Just don't use paypal for auto subscription services.

  • Hi I have been using PayPal for years and have not had a single problem with them you just need to look up their fees for what you are doing,

  • Oops sorry it is for receiving a payment of $15 for my daughter who sold some clothes on facebook and needs to post them. ☺

Bank deposit, give the buyer the bsb and account number.

      • Ok but the buyer is not keen so was wondering what else is available 😊

Well that pretty much only leaves PayPal.

        • See, the problem is that for $15, almost nothing is worth it other than paypal. It's probably not even worth the petrol money and time to go get cash on delivery…

        • @0blivion: $15 - Is there such a thing as micro-scammers?

        • @Baysew: I mean, for money definitely - if you can scam a few dollars from a thousand people, you're making bank. But the person on the other side here isn't gaining money, IF they're bad, they're only scamming some second hand clothes so….. not likely.
