Modern LCD TV's - vertical banding/DSE

Hi guys, I bought a Hisense N6 over the weekend. The TV is mainly for gaming. I immediately noticed vertical banding while playing my PS4 Pro. I can not un-see it, and it's very, very noticeable when in motion, particularly light or gray colours and when panning horizontally.

Just wondering what is considered acceptable for lower end LCD TVs these days? I have attached a link to some examples of what I am seeing, would appreciate any opinions on whether this is acceptable or not, given the panel type and price.

Thanks.

If you don't accept it then it's not acceptable

    • I get that, but at the same time, you need a valid reason to return or replace something. No doubt the retailer (The Good Guys) is going to try to tell me that it’s normal or acceptable.

    • If it isn't a defect they don't have to replace/refund. Goodguys don't do change of mind returns unless bought through eBay.

      • It's a defect because it impacts the primary purpose, that is watching TV. Thank the heavens AU has such good consumer laws.

        • I didn't realize it's a quality issue. I thought it was a limitation of the model as it's at the lower end of the spectrum. If it's a limitation of the design which is reflected in the price point then it's not a defect and the entitlements referenced above don't apply. The store might still accommodate you but they don't have to legally.

        • @El Grande: You’re wrong. My tv exhibits behaviour that the display models in two different GG stores did not. So yes, legally in Australia, they do have to accomodate me.

        • @aja12: Read the first line, "I didn't realize it's a quality issue. I thought it was a limitation of the model"

        • @El Grande: Yeah, first line followed by another 5 lines of pointlessness.

Hisense is a pretty low-quality brand, unfortunately. If you're not happy with it and it bugs you, take it back for a refund and/or exchange for a model you are happy with. For something that's this expensive and that you use for entertainment, it's not worth having something that'll annoy you every time you use it.

    • I’m aware that Hisense isn’t a premium brand, but the research I did before purchasing indicated that they were considered excellent performers for the money, including this particular model.

  • This is what you get with large LCD's. I went through two 60in Panas, and one LG. Just for lulz I contacted LG support directly. This was a high end TV, and exhibited EVERY single LCD problem to a degree that is easily noticeable on 80%+ of content. Long story short, they can't guarantee any manufacturing and it's 'normal'.

I dunno man. Take it back and get another. Keep doing it until they get annoyed with you, then contemplate if you wanna get refund or deal with ACCC.

OLED won't have these problems, but is very expensive still.

    • Cheers mate, this is more of the sort of feedback I wanted. The last LCD tv I purchased was 5 years ago, so i was wanting to know what is considered acceptable these days, as I know LCD’s typically have one or more types of flaws with the panel. There’s conflicting information on the internet. Unfortunately even OLED doesn’t seem immune from issues, there’s a lot of videos on YouTube of high end OLED TVs exhibiting horrible banding.

      • "wanting to know what is considered acceptable these days"

90% of consumers are (profanity) stupid and have no idea what they just spent $5000 on. Sweet high end Samsung bro, nice lack of insert_high_end_feature_here and DSE, backlight bleed, banding, etc. 'Acceptable' is mostly "does it turn on?" these days.

Without a doubt, any LCD you buy will have some kind of problem, and you WILL notice something eventually during bright panning scenes, if you look for it. It's just the technology. Plasma and OLED should fix most of these problems (though you say you've read about OLED problems too, and I'm not super familiar). Ignorance will also 'fix' it. :)

Sony is currently the best TV brand for LCD. My parents recently got a 65in, and my critical eye is quite happy with their result. My level of 'acceptable' is extremely limited DSE; no banding across the screen; some minor uneven backlighting/bleed 10-15cm around the edge that doesn't impact dark scenes.

My suggestion for you is to just take it back for a swap. "It has x, y, z issues, is not fit for purpose" and "Id like to swap for another unit as this one is faulty" if you want to stay with the Hisense. Know your rights. The 'not fit for purpose' is a key phrase that can be used to drop ACCC. Pretty much don't walk out of the shop unless you have a refund or a new TV. Perhaps stick with the Hisense for a few swaps as it's cheaper, then contemplate a higher priced Sony, or maybe OLED.

        Good luck buddy.

        • Thanks mate, I agree with all of your points. The 5 year old Sony LCD that this replaced has far better colours and viewings angles (I don’t recall the model number, but it was the cheapest in Sony’s line up at the time). But the banding is not something I’m really not happy with. I did not expect perfection for the brand and price, but I don’t think this is acceptable. I sent the store (Good Guys) an email yesterday morning, no response yet. I contacted their chat support yesterday morning, and said someone from the store will call. No call yet. I was happy to replace, but I’m contemplating pushing for a refund and waiting for Black Friday sales for a different brand.

@aja12: Don't bother with support at all. It gives them too much time to carefully word a response to make you go away.

Walk into the store with it and say you need to swap it (or return) cos this one is faulty, and proceed with the stuff I said earlier.

Avoid "Im not really happy with it", "I dont think" etc. It's faulty, fullstop. The reasons are x y z. And you're swapping/returning it. Don't take any shit, you're just there to get customer assistance to make the transaction, you've already decided the outcome.

      • "there’s a lot of videos on YouTube of high end OLED TVs exhibiting horrible banding."

Got a link? IIRC, the banding problem you're having is because of backlight issues, and OLED panels having no backlight, I'm having trouble seeing how they could suffer from the same issue.

OLEDs do have their own issues too though, no doubt, and that doesn't even include that they're exorbitantly expensive right now.

        • Just enter "OLED vertical banding" in YouTube search.

  • Some are better than others. LG is the worst, Samsung is better. It is still there and you will see it, but I couldn't put up with it on LG, and it's acceptable on the Samsung.

  • Banding and LCD go hand in hand. There is no way around this.

It's either live with it or pay a premium for oled.

    • YouTube "OLED vertical banding".

Jesus Christ, everyone is contributing to this thread in ways I didn't ask. I KNOW there are issues associated with LCD. I mention that in my post. There are two other LCD TVs in my house. The question was, what is an acceptable level. Did you read any of my post? Because you haven't answered any of the questions I asked.

      • Snap?

        • Not snap, just reply after reply from people who don't seem to have read the OP is annoying, and not telling me anything I don't already know.

          Yes.

          Better now?

  • PMS?
