PS4 or Xbox One S (and thoughts on EA Access)

Hi guys,

I know the PS4 vs Xbox One discussions have been done to death but I'm looking to finally purchase a new console.

Not interested in PC Gaming (prefer stress free, veg out on the couch experience).

I notice that EA Access is available on Xbox One and offers a pretty good library of games to download on a subscription.

Having a look through the titles available on EA Access shows instant value for me as I enjoy sports games (NHL, FIFA, Madden etc) and also the Battlefield Games (which I always enjoyed more than COD).

I guess I'm after peoples opinions on a number of factors.

  1. I've seen news reports indicating that EA Access MAY come to PS4 but what are everyone's thoughts. Will it actually happen?

  2. I know PS4 has the superior hardware but is it really noticeable (I currently only have 1080p TV but it's inevitable I'll eventually get a 4K set)?

I'm torn at the moment. I've been seriously looking at some of the Xbox One S bundles and also the PS4 (and even the PS4 Pro (for future proofing)).

For me the Xbox One S bundles offer far superior value (especially considering EA Access) but the PS4 and PS4 Pro just seems like a smarter move given it's superior hardware.

If EA Access was available on PS4 I'd definitely go for the PS4.

Sorry, I'm ranting a bit now.

TLDR:

Xbox One S (with EA Access) vs PS4/PS4 Pro (unlikely to get EA Access).

P.S. If I win a bit of coin on the Melbourne Cup today I'll just get an Xbox One X :)

Buy the console that the majority of your online gaming friends have. Games like Halo, Fortnite, PUBG (coming 12 Dec to XBox), Battlefield and FIFA are more fun with mates.

Also FWIW, the sports games on EA Access don't normally have the latest releases.

    • Not really into online gaming so that's not really an issue.

The latest sports games don't really bother me either. There's never a huge difference between the 17 and 18 versions is NHL,FIFA etc (that I would mind anyway).

      • There's never a huge difference

        It's at least 5%. :D

        Not really into online gaming

Any reason why not? I personally find chatting to mates whilst gaming really enjoyable.

A few years ago I was really into Battlefield etc online.

Then my mates and I started to settle down and have kids etc.

They have a significant impact on online gaming… :)

        • @SpottyMoose: Agreed - when kids are really young, it does make it difficult. We had a hiatus for a number of years, but now that our kids and our friends kids are getting a little older, we find it much easier to play a couple of hours at night.

I'm sure you'll have a blast whichever console you choose. All the best!

    • question, if i'm not going to use xbox live (it's not compulsory right? it's a paid online thing?) and i'm only going to play games from the dvds itself, will i need 1TB or is 500gb enough? (i dont know how the storage works)

  • I recently got a PS4 since most Xbox 'exclusives' are out on PC as well. PS4 had a large back catalog of great exclusives that I wanted to get through. Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, GT Sport, Ratchet and Clank, Gravity Rush 2, Yakuza, Bloodborne. And I already had a Vita so I can use the remote play similar to the WII U when the wife is using the TV. Also works out by the pool etc, so over christmas I can pretend to be engaged but can actually be playing video games.

  • Generally the biggest reason to get one console over another are the exclusive titles. So - what games/types of games do you play the most?

(Also - controllers, fwiw, personally I like the Xbox controller for FPS games. The PS controller just doesn't do it for me.)

      I like the Xbox controller

      Ditto.

Neither, PC. (Capable of this so called couch experience)

  • How much is EA access? Do you get access to all their latest games , eg NBA '18 ?

      • So that's cheaper than buying the NBA game each year. Or are their limits or conditions ( say online p2p only , no single player game etc)

        • I don't believe there are any restrictions.

If you wanted to play online I guess you'd need the Xbox Live subscription as well, just like any other games.

        • @SpottyMoose: Yep exactly this. Full games as if you'd bought them yourself (though only playable while you are still subscribed). Note that it is EA's NBA rather than the superior 2K Sports one.

In answer to @PVA - no you don't get the very latest, but the following years version seems to be added to the Vault about April. i.e. Fifa 17 came to the Vault in April this year. Pretty good imho. You can see the breakdown here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EA_Access#Games_in_the_Vault_f…

        • @tdth99:

Thanks for this, I thought the EA was the 2K one, looks like I thought wrong - I dont play, my son does.

      • $25-30 if you know the right channels.

        • Like?

        • Not that I can see at the moment?

          Please enlighten me…

  • depends on the games, if you wanna only play sports games and ea stuff, ea access is a good choice, but ea access only have old titles. newest one will still only availabe in digital and physical form.

as for me, ps4 takes my vote superior game library in terms of exclusive titles.

    • Oh, it's only old games?

      • +2

yeah like last year version of sport games i believe.

        • thanks.

  • EA access = a paid subscription within a paid subscription (live gold) that you have to pay a subscription fee to an internet provider to provide… and don't even get me started on the gold pass… (another paid subsription)

    • +1

From what I've read you only need the Live Gold subscription if you want to play online.

If you don't want online you can just get the EA Access subscription and play locally.

Xbox Gamepass is similar to the Playstation Now subscription.

i'm playing a disc version of sniper elite 4 that a friend lent me while they're away… for free. digital = shite… but it's your money. the main rule aplies here… just get the console your friends have. (if you have friends and they have consoles)

  • I generally agree with the 'get the console your friends have' advice, even though I went a totally different route. My PS4 mates have very different game tastes to me and we don't (and wouldn't) play online except on PC, so I got an Xbox.

This was almost entirely due to EA Access and almost entirely for the same reasons as the original poster. I like the sports games, play singleplayer mainly, and don't care about getting the latest Fifa/NHL etc right on release date.
And even still, you get 10 hours of the new game to try even before the release date and when those games come into the Vault around April/May next year, I can continue on. I can also try Battlefront 2 and Sims 4 etc (if I wanted to), in a couple of days time for example.
The quality of the Vault has surprised me, and I still find it surprising EA only charge $40pa for this.

I wouldn't hold your breath on EA Access coming to PS4, and the difference in visual quality between a stock PS4 and an Xbox One S is fairly marginal in real-world settings (this channel does good comparisons: https://www.youtube.com/user/CandylandGS) 4K gaming is probably less of a big deal than HDR I reckon, and all current gen consoles support that.

Entirely personal preference of course but I also think the One S is a really nice looking console, and I prefer Xbox controllers.

      Thanks for your comment.

I'm thinking I'll save my pennies for the Xbox One X.

      Great hardware and EA Access.

maybe another thing to think about is if you want to play 4K movies. PS4 doesn't play 4k bluray movies but I think the Xbox does.

I have a PS4 and was thinking ps4pro but this has made me stop and consider xbox for the first time since the original version around 2003.

  • I've got both and my main machine of choice is the PS4, but in your situation it seems like the better choice would be the XB1X with the Game Pass and/or EA Access.
