Apple MacBook Unables to Connect to Dodo Huawei 659 Modem NBN

Somehow my Macbook has recently kept dropping out of the wifi network, forcing me to restart the modem every time to reconnect to the network. I've tried to assign static IP for it but not fixing the issue. It seems somehow the modem doesn't assign DHCP IP address to the Macbook. Similar problem has been seen with my old iPad, but the iPad tends to "hold on" to the assigned DHCP IP a bit longer, doesn't lose its connection after when sleeping or starting up. Other devices such as Android phone, IP cameras, smart home devices don't seem to have this issue (even though all have connection issue every now and then but I would rather blame Dodo & NBN for the intermittent services)

My wifi setting on the Modem:

  • 2.4ghz (I turned off the 5Ghz band as Dodo recommends it could possibly cause IP conflict issue)
  • SSID security WPA-PSK+WPA2-PSK with TKIP+AES WPA encryption.
  • DHCP range from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.200 (leaving some for static addresses at the end of the range)
  • DNS - tried both auto assigned by router and Google 8.8.8.8 but don't see any different
  • Mixed band with fixed channel 6
  • Tried all combination 20mhz, 40mhz and 20/40mhz
  • Tried both Long & Short 11n Guard Interval
  • 11n MCS set as Auto
  • 100% power
  • WMS QoS enabled
  • WPS disabled

I've seen that the router doesn't have a capability of reserving DHCP addresses for more than 8 devices - this is quite difficult to accept.

Dodo can't understand what went wrong, keeps asking me to reboot the router which fixed the issue but this can't be the definite solution.

Should I need to buy a "better" modem rather than using the supplied by Dodo? If yes any particular one please?

Anyone can enlight me on this please? Much appreciated!

Try to play with SSID security settings. I.e. Leave only WPA2-PSK on.

And it doesn't make sense to turn 5Ghz off…

  • Better Modem yes Dodo like all the others who supply this have it locked down the even huawei can't help with.

The range is really bad (is it a distance thing)

Turning off 5-G makes no difference could be just a faulty unit.

Is it stable when you're using LAN if you can plug into it.

if you put in the model number and setup guides there is a kiwi internet company with help pages i found most stuff there.

In the end i was sick of it and changed it out to something decent, it wasn't updating firmware it was dropping the rest of my network even having wifi off and using it as a gateway only the rest of my network even using it as a gateway and nothing more.

This month is the month to buy something better with Black Friday cyber Monday

Also if you reset the whole thing with the pin to return to factory settings don't touch the QOS that caused issues too for me

  • First thing I’d do is get a replacement from DoDo… Then perhaps purchase a new better modem if that doesn’t help.

    • Already got a replacement modem from Dodo but everything is still the same!

      • Get another one and then ask for a credit for the cost of the modem

I seem to recall there was an issue with 40mhz wireless and certain Apple devices on 2.4ghz. I know that you say you tried 20mhz but perhaps try again? I would also disable QOS and all other advanced features until you get the basics stable.

    • Disabled WMM (QoS) and all devices have been staying connected for the last 24hrs! Should I permanently disable QoS then?

      • Sounds like it!

  • I've tried to assign static IP for it but not fixing the issue

Do you mean a static lease on the modem? Because if you set IP/subnet/gateway/DNS manually on the MacBook itself, it doesn't need DHCP. You can use a network location for home and another for roaming.

As for WiFi channels, I use an Android app called WiFi Analyser that has a nice channel graph of all nearby signals but I'm sure there are equivalents for other platforms.
