Recent AmEx Deal on Harvey Norman

As we all can see lots of HN deals because of the AMEX Promotion. Most of the deals were just $100 off the selling price. If people assume everyone owns an AMEX card, why don't they assume that everyone has more than one AMEX and simply put 25% off in the title? If I am purchasing sth at $500, I would definitely use more than 1 AMEX Card to get 2 $400 gift card and thus $25% off.

    Because the deal is not 25% off.

  • Block-quote why don't they assume that everyone has more than one AMEX

    Because some don't.

    Plus, buying a $799 entitle you 1 x $100 discount, even you have multiple Amex card, and thus, not 25% discount.

    And you also ass-u-me that all HN will split the transaction.

      If I have multiple AMEX Card, I would buy 2 x $400 gift card to get $200 off the $799 purchase, which is 25% off.

      • Actually, based on the full terms and conditions, gift cards purchase is not eligible for the cashback.

        • From someone in OzB: Purchasing gift cards and Visa gift cards are not allowed - But we know from XP that Amex has a very hard if not impossible way to tell if what you bought

  • i'm lost

  • If i'm buying something that costs $700 and is now $600, can you explain to me why its 25% off?

    • If I am buying something that cost $700, I would buy 2 x $400 gift card with 2 AMEX Cards, each will give me $100 credit.

      Your saving will be $100 off $400 plus $75 off $300, thus $175 off $700 (25% Off). You still have a gift card left with $100 balance which you only paid $75 for.

        You're giving a very specific example to support your point. You're making it unnecessarily complicated.

        The offer is $100 back for every $400 spent at HN. Multiple cards etc apply, but the offer remains the same.

        If I only have one Amex the $700 item would cost me $600. That's not 25% cheaper.

          That's the point I tried to make. If people can assume everyone owns 1 Amex card, why can't they assume more? 25% off is a better deal if the item costs more than $400.

        • @Maki: ass-u-me.

        Out of pocket, you just spent $700. That is bad advice mate.

        • No, only $600. I buy 2 x $400 gift cards, each gives me $100 credit back. I only spent $600 out of pocket. Then I get an item worths $700 plus a $100 gift card…

          @Maki:

          Why don't you show us the scan of the receipt, otherwise it didn't happen.

        • @ausdday:
          Just to let you know that I bought two $400 gift cards from harvey norman, credited $200 ($100 from each Amex Card) then used the gift cards to buy sth at $499.

          It literally costs me $374.25 for that item, and I still have $301 in one of the gift cards. Happy to send you the receipt if needed.

          @Maki:

          Until you convert that $301 card to cash, you are technically still paying $600 (cash) for an item that costs ($499). It just came with a $301 gift card.

          Having a $301 gift card isn't cash, it just makes you buy more items. If it's cash, you can spend it on other shops. When it's gift card, you are bound to only spend it in HN.

    … So what's exactly the problem?

  • +6

    Ummmmm…. is it just me or is this a stupid argument and conversation… Just sayin!

    • -4

      Just general discussion, mate.

      • +1

        Yes I guess it is general discussion… but it is predicated on multiple assumptions and ultimately has no net benefit (that I can identify)and in fact reduces the title simplicity…. for example you need to assume that all people that have AMEX have multiple cards, which they do not. You then need to assume that all people who have multiple cards have been within the first 40,000 AMEX card holders who have accepted the offer…. Then you need to assume that all people (who we assume have multiple AMEX cards and we assume have successfully enrolled all their cards) are spending an amount relative to the supposed 25%…. so in other words we are assuming that people are making relatively small and moderate purchases not large purchases (ie big freaking OLED TV).

        So we're assuming a lot of the purchasers… now lets look at the assumptions of the vendor/merchants…. we would then need to assume that every HN sales staff member is nice and pleasant and will in-fact split the transaction, which they may, but if you walked in with 20 cards to split my purchase of a thumping big OLED TV across (as another forum member holds apparently) then maybe assuming that they will do such a split maybe isn't such a wise idea… Yes we could go in multiple times and get Gift cards… but then we are assuming that the HN will sell the gift cards on an AMEX (which we know in the past has been a bit hit and miss) and then we assume based on XP that AMEX cannot identify you've picked up gift cards (probably a reasonable assumption but an assumption nonetheless)….

        OMG!!!!! I've been sucked in!!!!!!!

        Sooooooooo what I am saying (and I think others are saying) is there are an unusually large number of assumptions required in order for your posed suggestion to be appropriate and/or relevant… to the point where it is simply…. Silly….

        Just saying…
