Steam Link - GBP 16.94 ($28.97) shipped from Game UK

60

I wanted to buy a second Steam Link, EB Games wanted $90, and so I got one for about 1/3 the price at Game UK instead.
Steam Link

The Steam Controller is currently out of stock, but it could also be bought for GBP 27.99 ($47.85) - much less than EB Games (if you want to chance waiting for stock to come back in).
Steam Controller - currently OOS

  • i swear i saw steam link was $27 at EB under Myer in Sydney CBD last Friday.

  • So you missed the $27 steamlink deal?

    • Yep.. :(

Bought it when it was $27 at EB. Returned in 2 days. Very specific use product, not really worth it. EB keep doing deals on it.

If you have a lot of games with Steam and controller supported you should enjoy it playing them on TV.

      • Can't argue with that. I'll just say it wasn't for me.

    • I use it with Kodi and stream from my NAS, instead of the WDTV or media player.

      • Is the Kodi on Steamlink stable? I mean the native app

        • -1

it works really well (one exception, starting crashing on exit of the app)

You have to install in on your pc and load it into Steam as an app and run it that way.

All the movie covers load, tv shows etc. all good and easy to navigate, I use a logitech bluetooth keyboard with mouse-pad in one .

Just trying to set up wake-on-lan with the steam link, so i don't need to turn on the pc in the other room.

If you dont like kodi, you can just run it to mirror your pc and play the files like you were sitting in front of your pc.

          @diddy50:

In that case it is not the native app that can install on steamlink.

I already have Kodi on my HTPC.

Fully disagree! Not sure what you were expecting to get from it but it's for people who play video games. It's opened up my full steam collection, Origin collection, GOG galaxy collection and Uplay collection to my couch with an xbox controller or wireless keyboard/mouse.

great for playing local coop games or solo games. Not so great at trying to play games like Rocket League online.

I bought mine a couple weeks ago from EB Games for $27. It's not worth $90 but for $27 absolutely worth the value.

      • Origin collection,

I have problem with BF1, cannot control forward, backward with left jobstick.

What do you disagree with? I've already mentioned it's for a specific purpose, the one you have described. I was hoping to use it independent of having to keep a PC running which apparently isn't its intended use case.

        • I was hoping to use it independent of having to keep a PC running which apparently isn't its intended use case.

So you mean you bought it because you thought it can run games independently without PC?

@superforever: Well I was hoping it would support some native apps like Youtube or even Netflix considering it's not too much to ask these days from small boxes that latch on to your tv and take up a precious hdmi port. lol

@johl: You said not really worth it. It is worth it. You're falsely leading people to not want to buy one of these because of your poor research…

        • -1

          @johl:

          You bought the wrong things.

It is mainly for streaming Steam games.

        • @geo365: Actually I didn't just say 'not really worth it', there was context that's missing in your quote and the full line reads that it's for a specific use. For people who do know it won't do anything but stream games and may be misled by similar assumptions as mine, so it is in fact not a worth buy for them.

As for my research, buying a product and trying it out to explore what its capable of and optionally sharing the outcome in public forum is good research in my books.

        • -1

@johl: Theres a promo video. It says all of this in the video. 2 minutes long…

        • -1

@geo365: Irrelevant point as the promo offers 0 technical information apart form the streaming resolution. I had seen the promo and more. I knew what it could do, but logically that does not qualify what else it can do. For ex. the promo has no mention of bare desktop streaming they use that can be used to broadcast Netflix, and I was able to successfully watch Netflix (with Audio) but only for a few minutes; it's only after my research i found that it will freeze and force you to reset the connection if you play "heavy" content from outside the steam app.

        • @johl: This comes back to the point you made about taking you out of context. You said its a very specific product and not worth it. You never elaborated on why. You simply just said it's specific, and not worth it. That's my problem. You didn't bother to do the correct research on it, bought a product that didn't meet your needs. Returned it, then found the desire to come on here and tell people its a specific product and not worth it. Why? There's nothing to be gained in your original post. For anyone.

        • @johl: IDK what the hell you're on about with needing native YouTube and Netflix apps, you essential screen mirror your desktop to the Steam Link. I bought a wireless mouse and keyboard, then just load up the web browser to YouTube or Netflix and start watching. In the year I've had mine I don't think I have played any games on it yet…

        • @geo365: My original comment clearly points that the product is for a very specific use and while in context i claim that it's not a good buy; implying a warning to anyone thinking the product may offer more that it does.

        • @KingCorona: I'm aware that it works by mirroring the screen and streaming the audio and does not hook directly into OpenGL/DirectX buffers. I didn't get your luck with streaming Netflix via a browser as it kept freezing; and i'm not alone to experience this as trying to debug the issue I stumbled upon numerous threads where others have expressed the exact same concern. And for native apps, if steam link supported those one could just use it like any other tv box and not have to fire up a PC just to watch Youtube of Netflix, so it's not really a terrible idea and tiny devices these days are more than capable to hand such tasks.

        • @johl: i mirror my windows desktop to my steam link. I can watch youtube and even netflix on my steamlink thats mirrored to my pc.
The response rates are really fast on the steamlink while using the windows desktop mirror feature. There is only one problem with mirroring occasionally i need to go back to my pc and authorise UAC in order to launch a windows program.
IMO everything u can do on a windows desktop pc you can do on your steamlink minus the UAC.
The windows desktop mirroring feature on the steamlink is the fastest out of all the streamers i have tried so far.
And i have tried a few like Chromecast , Roku (needed a intel graphics chip in order to work) , and it even beats Teamviewer with response times.

        • @AzNDuDe: I'm sure that's the case but for me milage was different. It kept freezing every few mins. It's interesting to know it uses virtual displays and desktop mirroring to capture the screen.
