Installing 90cm Freestanding Oven Advice

Hi guys, getting to the business end of my renovation and its time install my oven. I've got a 90cm Smeg freestanding unit; the kitchen cabinets are in, the gas and electric is installed, the range hood is attached.

The oven been sitting to the side for a while, and I've just opened up the installation instructions, which include a wall brace to stop the oven tipping, as well as a separate anti tipping chain. My question is: are these really necessary, or is it Smeg covering their ass? The reason I ask is that the oven will be installed backing onto a stud wall, and I don't believe the studs are anywhere near the right location for the anti tipping wall mounts.

If anyone has any experience with this it would be much appreciated.

  • Smeg are covering their arse. Unless you lived in an earthquake zone then personally I wouldn't bother. I j stalked a new freestanding oven 18 months ago. The old one had no antitiping chain. I didn't bother with the new one either.

It's not like a dresser that could be totally stuffed and when a drawer or 2 is pulled out then the centre of gravity shifts and it tips.

  • No experience just my opinion haha

I think it is similar to the IKEA drawers…but even less probable, but still possible? I can only think either the whole oven could fall out onto someone or perhaps if someone tried to rest a very heavy roast or something on the opened oven door, that could potentially tip the oven a bit and the roast could fall onto someone's lower body?

I did check my oven just now and it seems pretty stuck in there…but I didn't install it, came with the place when we bought it.

    Good Luck!

    Is it on legs?
I think they would have a fair bit of leverage with the door down and a large kid sitting on the door.
Why not put a 900mm block of 12mm ply and screw that to the wall than screw the anchor to the ply.
This could be recessed into the gyprock if no clearance.
I’m sure someone has flipped one before.

    • Yeah on legs.

  • Usually i would say no with things like cupboards unless you have kids. I did secure my TV for the just in case reason.

In this case the issue is the oven door and leverage. If the oven door is open all the way down its not hard to tip the whole unit forward. You could accidentally drop thing when the doors is open and the whole unit will move.

    • Aussieprepper is right, the issue is when you for instance place a full roast pan/dish on the open door, which wouldn’t be bright but I guess could feasibly occur and the oven could tip over.

  • I have seen an instance in Harvey Norman when a kid openned out the oven door and stood on it. Tipping the unit in top of him (and breaking the door).

It was in the dented floor stock area. The normal showroom area has them secured. But im sure they secured them after that…

Maybe try opening the doors and put some pressure on them to see if you can tip it over.

  • OP username fits. Install oven with no anti-tip measures -> Oven tips -> Burnertoasty.

    Install it properly.
