Buying iPhone X from USA

Hi ozbargainers,

Considering getting an iphone X in store in NY in a couple of weeks (if they happen to be in stock).

RRP is 999 USD + state tax ~8.75% = 1,086.4125 USD = 1,413.97 AUD.

Does the price sound correct and are there other factors to consider?

I'm aware that I'll only have 1 year of international warranty, and a different power adapter plug.

Could've bought one here for $1579, then claimed back the gst via trs of $157.90, resulting in a $1421.10 local phone.

    • Great point. Only works if there's stock in Australia before the flight, which isn't that far away so possibly not. Alternative is just to stick it out with my iphone 6 which I might just do!

  • Plus, if you buy from USA and import it, you will have to pay import duty on it as it is more than $1000

      This…

You can try not declare, but hate to get caught.

Often people may destroy any trace of boxes etc that is evident the item was purchased there.

Also side note - if you claim through the TRS, you are meant to redeclare if the good(s) come back in. I think someone here has previously pointed out that’s not the case, but they were certainly interested last time when I came back in (we were forward thinking and knew our pooled limited would be fine - 2 of us were travelling).

In all my years of travelling I have never seen customs actively checking your items to see if you're bringing back anything new. Even having the box is not really evidence - they don't care THAT much.

      • They match purchases with passport ID and bank purchases in your name especially if you bought it duty free oversees, they know if you have spent way over, red flag at smart gate and they will send you for further examination. if your trying to skip by playing dumb, they are tightening the screws. We were warned earlier this year coming back in things are going to be getting tougher. We declared everything and admittedly knew we were over, more surprised they knew by how much and didn't get any grief, we declared it all. I think Sometimes just being honest with nothing to hide pays off.

        • You've gotta be kidding me. Sure the government, especially Customs, have better things to do than harass people about this stuff?

        • @0blivion: I wish man there is probably a tolerance there but the clearly knew,

A bunch of us had a huge argument with the whole lot of immigration about the baiting in Duty free returning in. they tried to fine one of our mates for buying a couple of bottles of alcohol and lying on his customs declaration. Which he didn't they also admitted to that to once they understood.

They get you to fill in your customs card on the plane and sign it then march you through a massive duty free area to get to immigration.

They actually gave in and said the signage needed to be reworded.
