Website for Calculating Lifetime Car Costs

Call me OCD but does anyone have a good site that lets me estimate how much my car will cost me during its lifetime?

Including financing from dealer/bank?

  • Like TB says… pen & paper. It is the best way.
If you are doing research for a vehicle you intend to buy include depreciation (based on wholesale value not dream prices from used car sites), servicing costs, insurance and any high cost components that need to be replaced frequently. eg: timing belt, fast wearing rotors and brake pads, etc. This is where some "jazzy" cars really hurt the pocket.

Good luck budgeting beyond warranty. Lets be honest, some cars break randomly, some don't.

  • NRMA have an annual cost calculator, you dont need to be a member to access

  • Best way not to calculate, take a Tafe course for car service instead, after that, see how much you get spare money left for two years saving, then used 60% to buy a dream car.

I find it depends greatly on the person and what they know or willing to do:
These are the biggest factors to me
    - New car, 2nd hand, EOFY/demo model, pickles auction or online
-Financing rate depends on the persons credit rating and how they get the loan (equity or just secured loan with car)
-Negotiating skills at private sales and or car dealerships
-being able to spot a lemon (can lose more money than buying new car)
-servicing the car yourself or bringing it to a mechanic or using the dealership for warranty
-model of the car you're wanting to buy: Japanese, European, American, ect
-as xywolap mentioned above frequency of replacement parts and how easy it is to access them as mechanics charge over $100 an hour in labor. This can double a repair cost
-Availability of the parts. Like lots of Toyota parts around but not much Daihatsu

Some websites have examples of the breakdown cost of a car ownership but a lot of the time they car worse case scenarios from New dealership life servicing and never buying things on sale, like tires

  • It's cheaper than a wife and kids. That's all you need to know
