Pocket Wi-Fi Japan Recommendations for Providers

Hi,

Been a few years since I've been to Japan, last time I rented a pocket wifi at the airport and returned it there.
Just wondering if theres been any update to the services. Can anybody recommend a good/cheap one? Will have kids iPad and mrs phone connected as well.

Thanks!

Whirlpool has a good wiki for Japan travel. Maybe give this link a try.

      • Yeah, get a SIM from that and take your own unlocked pocket wifi or a phone to hotspot with.

        • The problem with a lot of these SIMs is that they are limited to a few hundred MB a day, even if you have a xGB card which frustrates me as they get capped to 256/256kbps afterwords which is pretty much useless.

Check if the place you are staying provide free pocket wifi. I have stayed at 2 airbnb place in Japan and they both provided free pocket wifi even though the listing didn't really specify it.

Also bring a 1 big Powerbank to connect so you'll have access all day long.

  • I used Ninja Wifi and it was great. Whichever provider you go with though make sure you have a decent sized battery pack to bring around with you, The juice on pocket wifis drain pretty quickly.

Probably also worth mentioning every Airbnb we stayed at provided one too.

    edit: typo

  • I use Ninja Wifi. No need to prebook, they are always available at the terminals.

  • I used wi fi rental store, very convinient, to return it I posted it back from wherever I was, you can return it at the airport too if you like. I did get the priciest one though, which was unlitmited data and worked in all areas, I went up a mountain in Kobe and had no issues with it. The airbnb I stayed at provided one too, and that one had no service at the mountain, whereas mine did.

btw for a powerbank I used an Anker 20800mha powerbank, it charged my phone, camera, wifi and was a lifesaver. It was a little heavy but I was super happy with the product got it off ebay for about $60 with a coupon, definately worth it, I get roughly 8-10 charges out of it for my phone alone if that gives you any indication of how many charges it can provide.

Also keep in mind, bring an aussie powerstrip with you and at least one adapter, you can get them at the airport or at don quiote if you want something a little cheaper.
