Something to Replace Google TV

I have had google tv for ages but because our internet was so slow it never got used. I have now got an internet speed of about 20mps, which allows me to watch Iview etc:on my computer. Now the google tv doesn't work, in fact Sony stopped making them ages ago. I dont want to change my tv to a smart tv, it cost over $3000 a few years ago and works perfectly. I know nothing about the add on boxes that will allow me to watch, Iview, you tube and the other internet provided services. Can someone help and point me in the right direction please. I have satellite internet, which I'm happy with, but I'm not sure if 20mps is fast enough. Thanks

20Mbps is more than fast enough for multiple streams, especially if your TV(s) are 1080p resolution or lower.

The OzBargain community tends to recommend the Xiaomi Mi Box 3, which is an Android TV box (I have two of them myself). The device plugs directly into your existing TV through HDMI, so you do not have to upgrade your TV. Depending on the model of your TV, you may be able to control the box using your existing TV remote, but the remote included is excellent and even has a microphone for searching with your voice! They run a special version of Android called Android TV, which gives you a great TV-centric interface, and a lot of apps that may be installed.

Services like Netflix, Stan, etc. are quite simple to setup, but getting shows from iView, etc. is a bit more difficult. The easiest way is to install Kodi through the Google Play Store, and download the relevant add-on from this website.

One note about this product: make sure you buy the Xiaomi Mi Box 3, not the 3S - while it is more powerful, it is a Chinese-only edition, and is more difficult to set up and use. Usually the standard one will say words to the effect of International Edition or Global Edition, etc.

  • Worth considering the Fire TV Stick - assuming Amazon launch here soon with it. Should be relatively cheap, and runs Kodi. There might well be some deals with Prime too.

  • Or just get a Chromecast, install the apps on your phone and then "cast" them to the TV. This is by far the easiest solution.

  • Sony stopped making them ages ago

Are you referring to Sony Android TVs? They are still making them for sure http://www.sony.com.au/microsite/androidtv/

Although Chromecast would be your cheapest solution, assuming your working TV has a HDMI port, and either a USB port for power OR you need a spare USB smartphone/tablet charger for power

    • Hello R-Man, Google TV was a set top box that basically took the internet to your TV. There were other systems around, but I thought at the time it was the best. It cost $299 at the time, but as I understand it, was quickly discontinued. https://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2413422,00.asp

  • Another vote for mi box 3.
