Replacement for Velodyne CHT-10R Subwoofer Advice

Looking at replacing a Velodyne CHT-10R for 50/50 music and HT use in a room that is approx. 20m² with 2 open doorways.

I know from all reports the SVS PB-1000 (~$999) would go well but also considering getting two of the Paradigm PDR 100 (2x ~$449).

I've read that two subs, even of a lower output can sound better than one.

Also advice from anyone that owns these subs would be appreciated.

  • I have the SVS SB-1000 which is the sealed version of the PB-1000. Sealed sub woofers are said to be better for music than ported ones. I absolutely love the clean and very powerful bass.

    • Thanks, glad to hear you're enjoying the SB-1000.. I was thinking ported to get more low end and impact for movies and have heard the PB-1000 is still very good for music.

  • I have read many reviews although I have different brand subs however always the SVS sub is always discussed as very good performance per $
I would get the SB1000 (Sealed but you have a high ratio of music listening 50% rather than the PB) and then in future, add another to give you that .2 HT experience.
I wouldn't waste my money on the Paradigm as that is the bare entry-level. I see many on Gumtree for sale … it must mean something. SVS subs on Gumtree are very rare and if they are for sale … it's due to a seller upgrading to a more powerful SVS or replacing an older… and they get snapped up pretty quick! Please do some google research and you will see reviews.
Although you have a small room, positioning/calibration are paramount as you may get the peak bass wave outside the room.
If you wanted 100% music I would recommend a REL using a Speakon cable.

Edit: I have the Klipsch SW-115 15" sub and this hammers. I purchased this for a very good price @ $800 however it has been replaced by the R-115SW (Reference) ~ $2K
My room size is similar to yours and I can say that this sub is an overkill. I do have 2 of these and when I watch a Blu-ray (like Star Wars … etc) the walls rattle.

In future, i'd love to get the SVS-Ultra. I'd look for second hand and won't pay $4K for it … wow and it weighs ~ 90KG :-)

    • Thanks for the advice, a SVS Ultra sub would be very nice! But out of my price range unfortunately..

Also apologies, my ratio of music to movies is probably more 30:70 realistically.

Done some reading and realised that because the room has doorways into a larger space I should take that into consideration so the total area is more like 80m²..

So at this stage I'm tending towards the SVS PB1000 or PB2000 for the low end extension and movie effects but still apparently very good for music.. and add another down the track if it's not enough low end.
