EB Games Trade - PS4 South African Console

Hi all

So I would like to trade in my PS4 500gb console for the PRO version. Originally bought in South Africa.

On the site it says only Australian games and consoles are accepted. I can understand games, and consoles that maybe use different voltage, IE, USA. My question is, is there a difference between lets say the UK, South African and Australian PS4 models? I don't see any references of any kind on the PS4 iself.

Why trade-in? Well, seeing as there is possible issues with the origin of my console, I would rather try and sell it to EB games, than explaining to a buyer why this console is exactly the same as any other PS4, although it was not bought here.

Cheers

  • They'll probably have different model numbers, like CECHXUXYRYTD for one region, and a different one for another region.

The blue ray player function may have a lock on it, and the language options might be different. The firmware may also be localised.

The hardware and plug/voltage won't matter. It'll play games the same and run off an australian plug.

    • I will give them a call and ask.

So far, in terms of all functionality, it seems that the only difference is on the PS account. I created a new one since I got here, and can run Stan, Foxtell etc etc, which was not available on the other PS account. Everything else in terms of DVDs, Blu-rays etc are not locked in any way.

      • Depends what you mean by functionality.

The hardware is almost certainly the exact same.

The only thing different inside the box is the plug cable but that's an item everyone has and costs $1. Luckily sony has used the same standard plug since the PS1 so i'm sure EB games has tonnes of replacement power cables that can be added to trade ins.

The difference will be in the software, the firmware installed and what can be installed as an update. I don't know if you can change localisation. You might not be able to. That would be an issue, if I was EB i wouldn't want to sell a system with a foreign firmware.

  • You can call and ask, you might get lucky or get someone who isn't sure? But from personal experience no, I think they check the serial number and if its not Aus, its a no go, I don't think anything else matters (even if its same hardware and software).

  • After some digging, it seems that the only difference is the DVD region, which is going to be a problem here. I don't think the Australian DVDs will play on the console. That is probably the only reason, they can't offer to take these

    • +1

Correct, South African PS4s are region 2, Australian PS4s are region 4. But even if they were the same region, every region is stamped with a different barcode which EB scans and would probably not accept. My suggestion is to look at what they go for on Gumtree, cut $50 off the price and explain it's a South African console and doesn't play Australian DVDs (but does play Australian games and blu-rays), chances are, you'd still find a buyer, and the amount you get will probably be the same as what you would have gotten from EB anyway as a trade-in.

      • Anyone still play dvd out of PS4? small chances, but dont think it worth $50 price cut. good luck man

  • A lot of dvds are region 2+4 so they can be manufactured for both uk and Oz and SA markets. I’d put a R4 dvd in and see if it plays, you never know your luck.

  • Just trade it in anyway, with a bit of luck on your side the peon salesperson won't check and it will be their problem not yours.
