Is my SDHC a Fake? (Solved: SDHC was not fake)

Please ignore my original post below. It turns out that the problem was entirely user error on my part.

I recently purchased a 16GB SDHC card from a China based retailer that is regularly featured here on OzB. I ordered it about 6 weeks ago and it arrived today. It is one of these: https://www.gearbest.com/memory-cards/pp_718126.html

I am worried that the card that I've received might be a fake and would appreciate your views as to whether I'm right before I contact the seller. I don't want to cause a problem where there doesn't need to be one, as I've purchased lots of other items from the retailer (mainly xiaomi stuff) and it has all been good quality, so I wouldn't expect them to be selling rip-off stock.

  1. When I go to properties, it only shows available space of 39.8MB. - https://i.imgur.com/fEz3YE6.jpg
  2. In the list of drives, the logo that comes up looks pixelated and amatuerish. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if the icon is built into Win10, or somehow tied to the card by the manufacturer. - https://i.imgur.com/ybqUyaW.jpg
  3. There is a white smudge around the cutout on the front of the packaging. When I look closely, the printing around the smudge is pixelated (https://i.imgur.com/H1fQUvt.jpg).
  4. Past sandisk products that I've purchased have had a serial number. The back of this card has two lines of text. The first line is no more than 12 smudged characters, while the second simply states 'Made in China'. The rear surface of the card is slightly dimpled.

Let me know what you think.

Run h2testw to check actual specs

    • It would only let me test 39MB. However, when I put it into the card reader a few drives appear. The biggest is 1 GB.
Results all come in close to below:

      Test finished without errors.
You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.
      Writing speed: 15.2 MByte/s
      Reading speed: 71.6 MByte/s
      H2testw v1.4

  • Fake or not it ought to work out of the pack.

Did it ever show as 16gb capacity in Windows?

I think its real but the SD adapter or dongle or the sd card itself is faulty

Turns out you were spot on. Thanks for the suggestion.

Try why different devices and try fill it up and use the card and then report back.

If it doesn't work as intended I.e fill up past 12-13gb (because gotta leave adobe 0 some space for over provisioning I forgot the usual % something like I think 8-12 maybe percentage extra but usually you can tweak it) then it is a fake or at best a reduced capacity sd card.

If it is fake don't use it even for backup small files unless you don't mind surprise random files disappearing.

Used to buy usb flash drives off eBay a few years ago when prices seemed to go down. Many times they were a fake and too good to be true.

h2testw is all you need and maybe a file explorer to double check.

That ugly logo is pretty standard for Windows 10. My SP3 showed that with all SD's.

    • It looks so amatuerish that I figured it had to be fake. Just another Microsoft 'feature'.

Hi newdad, could you pls send me your order number for better confirming?

    • Thanks for following up. Turns out the problem was a combination of a dodgy (genuine sandisk) SD adapter and my Win10 Dell PC struggling to write a Linux image to the card. I borrowed another adapter and used an old dual boot laptop to repartition and reformat the card and it is now performing to spec.

Thanks to all for your suggestions, they helped me find the problem.
