Uni + Work - Uni Graduates - Standing out from The Crowd

Hi! I am currently studying a Bach of Commerce at Macquarie Uni whilst also working Part Time in Retail for a big Telco Company. I have thoughts on internally transferring to a double degree next year that comprises of Commerce & Science. On top of my current major Business Info Systems from the Commerce end of the degree, I am also planning on doing a Cyber Security major from Science. What are your thoughts on studying Cyber Security? Could anyone suggest to me what else I could do to put my "foot in the door" of the tech industry and if there are any possible recommendations you could make so as to help me stand out from the rest of the crowd. Any biased and non-biased opinions would be much appreciated on the matter.

Thanks :)

  • Do an internship in a cyber security firm, no need to study it. This is the real way to get your foot in the door especially as a current uni studentl.

  • That's good choice, your job will never be outsourced, good luck! Just apply, apply, apply. also connect with professionals at uni events, lecturers tutors etc

  • Probably look to try to change to even a basic internship (paid?) in one of the companies you would want to work for. YOu would have to ring around, but i'm sure they must do Work Experience (the engineering companies do)?

Other option is try to find something that you think will be beneficial and try to get some basic experience in that area. I don't know anything about this field sorry, but maybe trying to get summer work in commerce, instead of retail

  • Cyber Security would be a good choice. However it is just like IT and commonly insourced/outsourced.

  • Seek out internal opps and contacts within desired area at your current telco. If you have no where to start try looking up someone who works in the graduate recruitment or program space, or by chatting to an area/local HR rep.

  • If you want to stand out. Work in the industry while you study. I never understand graduates that finish "then" apply? I worked in my industry the day I started the degree. It was tough but I graduated a manager. You look at the graduates coming in nowdays and they suck, but are meant to be the cream of the crop. Everyone can balance uni and work except a few degrees which have fulltime contact.
