Mobile Plan for Canada Holiday

I am going to Canada for a two week holiday.

Should I use roaming on my Australian SIM, or buy a prepaid SIM when I get there? Are there any plans I can buy before leaving? I am looking for the best value option, I don't need to be contactable on my Aussie number.

Thanks.

  • Never roaming, it's horrendously expensive. Only for receiving SMSes which is free. Get a local SIM. I'll find that wikia in a moment.

    Here we are: http://prepaid-data-sim-card.wikia.com/wiki/Canada

Interesting: "Canada has the highest rates for data on the North American sub-continent right now. This makes it quite expensive to buy a local SIM card for a short visit. Alternatively, you may think of bringing a SIM on roaming from the US, Mexico or overseas. Compare their rates with local Canadian rates given above."

then goes on to mention some US, Mexico and other countries, but not Australia. There's the Vodafone $5/day for postpaid customers of course.

  • You've got Rogers and Telus off the top of my head, there's also a couple more I can't think of right now.
Canadian prepaid isn't cheap however, so definitely do your research.

I'd compare their prepaid plans to USA's AT&T or T-Mobile which you can usually add Canadian/Mexican coverage, might work out better.
If you're stopping over in the USA on the way to Canada, you can at least confirm the USA sim is working when you land.

  • Canadian mobile data is horrendously costly.
If you expect to use data like you do at home (a gb or two a week, for example) I would look into the Vodafone $5 a day roaming, as it now covers Canada.
I looked into it for a kid going on exchange 12 months ago, and the best deals were https://www.koodomobile.com/ and http://www.pcmobile.ca/

Note that 2Gb of data will cost something like $60!

  • I lived in Canada, it was a rip off for phone charges, you had to pay to receive calls!
