    Bargain!!

How can I not get one when they even throw in that special screen cut-out feature at the top - free of charge!!

    • +2

Some people seem to be really obsessed by that, not sure why? It depends on how it is being used by the app providers. My understanding is that each side would be used for "housekeeping" e.g. battery, signal strength etc. will be interesting to see.

      • You're right - it depends on how the developers incorporate that cutout into their software.

It won't help with video though - the "full screen" image will either end where the cutout starts or, if it goes all the way to the top, then there'll be missing bits of the video.

        • Not an issue if the "horns" are used for the housekeeping or are black - it just means the screen is a little smaller. People will get used to that really quickly.

        • +1

          @try2bhelpful:

          "horns"

haha - I couldn't figure out before what to call that!

There's apps online to show what that cutout would look like if a full screen video made use of the "horns". Looks quite ugly and annoying!

Makes me wonder how they've written the screen specs - does the number of pixels for the x-axis in the spec include the horns? To get the number of pixels, it won't be a simple "x" x "y" calculation.

        • @bobbified: I wish I could claim "horns" but that is what I have seen them called elsewhere. Can't see too many app writers trying to incorporate the horns unless they are where the score are kept for video games, etc. Like all devices nowdays it is all in the way the software uses it. Nobody is going to try to do a film using the horns and a cutout, unless they are really bad app writers.

        • +1

          @try2bhelpful:
For apps like YouTube, you'd hope that the edge of a full screen video doesn't go to the top of the horn.

          https://apple.insidercdn.com/gallery/22793-28021-22786-27981…

If a video plays like this, it'd really suck.

        • +1

@bobbified: Man, you hope they can do better than that, don't you. It is like when they used to trim off movies to fit the theatre/TV screen size. Saw a great sendup of Gone with the Wind where they had cropped for TV.

        • @try2bhelpful:
Yes, I hope they have enough common sense to just trim the horns off the videos and have it so it's like a slightly smaller screen! haha

The other thing that I'd be cautious about is that facial recognition feature for security. If it is too annoying to use or it doesn't work properly, there's no choice (since there's no fingerprint reader) but to go back to typing a password each time to unlock!

        • @bobbified: you can double tap the video for it to go into widescreen with black bars around the video. I find it very unique and appealing. Always good to see something new

        • @dylanando:
You're right! I just googled it to see the way it works.

Don't know if it's just me or if its a bad representation of the function on the site I looked at, but the black edge around the whole video makes the phone look a little…back in the early 2000's period.

Don't you think so? I think they should've at least tried to fill the screen to the bottom edge so that it looks like a TV where some movies get cut off top and bottom only.

(here it is for anyone else that wants to see:
          https://www.businessinsider.com.au/how-iphone-x-notch-will-h…)

        • +1

@bobbified: Agreed, Looks as if there is massive borders again. However for the whole video to be shown without distortion this would have to be done. I'd prefer the notch and just hope that nothing 'thrilling' happens on the left side lol.

        • +2

@bobbified: It will all depend on how they sort out the aspect ration in the end. Will be interesting to see what happens once they have had a chance to develop apps and get feedback from consumers. I agree the bars look naf. Would have no trouble with black on the horns and the rest of the screen filled.

  • +2

As always it will work out cheaper overall to get a sim only plan and buy the phone outright - it is a big expenditure up front to buy the phone however. Are many people here looking to snag one tomorrow?

    • I've always gone with buying outright however been told by numerous people that a plan is 'always cheaper' i've never ran the numbers nor do i care but yes i want one. Doubt i'd be able to get my hands on one though.

      • +7

A plan is 100% of the time more expensive, why else would the telco provide the plans if it didnt make them more money than selling it outright.

        • This, I also hate being 'locked down'.
Hope I can grab one and knock it off on gumtree for double :P

        • +1

You need to run the numbers, this is usually the case, but not always true. Sometimes carriers subsidise the phone. I got a Galaxy Tab A for free last year on a plan, completely subsidised.

        • @Burnertoasty: They say it's free but is it really? Did you compare the $ with a sim-only plan with the same inclusions?

        • +2

@Quantumcat: Yep, i got it for the shared data and its cheaper than Telstra add ons

    • +1

Will be looking when they are in store won't be buying tomorrow. I have an iphone 6 plus which meets my phone needs at the moment. I've just come back from overseas, but if I was heading out in a couple of months time, I might have been tempted by the better camera. I will be interested to see where the iphones go next year, given the technology of the iphone X. I think the iPhone 8 was a mistake on Apple's part - it was never going to excite the masses given the release of the iPhone X.

  • +2

Wait for a grey import galaxy s8+ 64GB deal on OB for $700 and get a $20/month sim (Assume 2GB data).
    total cost over 24 months = $940

    iPhone X 64GB and 2GB data over 24 months = $2208

Fair enough 1yr warranty, that's ok just buy another galaxy s8+ if it fails and it will still be cheaper. Simple logic.

    • that is if you can get the warrantly honoured. A lot of them are "send it back if it is faulty and you "might" receive a replacement or repaired phone". No ACCC for you though.

      • No ACCC for you though.

Bingo. Buyer beware with OS stock and warranty.

        • So many people come on here complaining that overseas companies won't honour their grey import warranties and/or complaining that local companies won't service products brought from overseas companies. I feel their pain, but, to a certain degree, you get what you pay for.

Sometimes I think Loki guides some of my choices. Normally I pay for my technology with the Amex or Visa card and get the one year extra warranty. I bought my iPad Mini4 with 10% off gift vouchers from Dick Smith, (bought the same day), and that was the device that had the battery issue just short of 2 years old. Fortunately Apple decided that ACCC ruling for phones was good enough for the Mini4 as well.

        • @try2bhelpful:

Sometimes I think Loki guides some of my choices

Who is this mysterious Loki you speak of?

        • @try2bhelpful: must be one expensive battery replacement paying that much extra for warranty. I'd just take my phone to a repair shop 2 years later and pay to get it replaced.
If warranty is an important factor then pay around $950 outright for Galaxy s8+ (recent mobileciti deal) and you're still better off.
If premium iPhones are showing problems within 2 years, then there's something wrong. For a $1500+ outright phone, you'd expect it to be high quality. I know that iPhones are premium phones and have the most reliable OS and all but I think the price is getting ridiculous now. Anyway each to their own.

        • @gezza90: One of my iProducts are over 10 years old and the battery is still going strong. Most of my iProducts are still going strong and I have no problem getting takers for the ones I want to pass on. They are premium products and you pay the premium for the service. I'm willing to pay for the service as I also like the products. I hung out to buy the Note7 as my work didn't want to pay for iPhones, right up until it had an internal combustion engine. Now the Notes are on par with the iPhones.

    • -1

Not much of your logic works,or your math.

  • +6

The reason I buy Apple products is customer service:
    a) I took in my nearly 2 years old iPad mini 4 because the freebie battery app I got from the Appstore showed the battery was "bad" they connected it up to their system, ran the diagnostic, told me the battery was bad and they gave me a refurbished replacement.
    b) My other half took in his iphone 6 as it was playing up. He got a refurbished phone for the battery replacement cost of $119. We quibbled but realised we could sell the phone for at least double that, given it is a 128 Gb version, if we wanted to.
    c) I was interested in the iPad 10 inch version but wasn't sure it was for me. I bought one, tried it for a couple of weeks, decided it was too big and handed it back to them and got a full refund. No problem at all.

Would be genuinely interested in hearing similar stories for Android phones.

    • +1

I had a problem with my Nexus 5. Google sent me a refurbished one as replacement with a box to send back the old one. Other Android phones, I've had to take in to a manufacturer service centre and wait a week or two. I only buy Google phones now (for the regular OS updates mainly).

      • +2

        Thanks for the info.

I take my devices to the local Apple store and they replace it on the spot. IOS is updated very regularly. It is horses for courses though.

    • I have had many apple devices, nearly all have failed in some way at some point with the hardware.
Faulty motherboard on an original TiBook, took them 3 months to fix.
Dodgy hinge on the same laptop making it unusable as hinge was flappy as f**k. This was prior to there being an apple store.

Overheating first gen ALBook (due to overuse of thermal paste on CPU) and expanding battery issue. replacement battery provided, overheating issue marked as "acceptable" so nothing done about it. Apple store in Sydney was open by this time.
      Various dramas with ipods.

Loads of issues with the cables on power packs.

Note, I have never dropped, mistreated or caused any issues with these devices, the problems have been by the manufacturer. I ditched apple products after I had had enough of shoddy production values.

Moved to primarily samsung android products and never had a faulty one yet and couldnt be happier.
      Latest devices are:-
Galaxy Tab S tablet, 3 years old still running like a dream with a custom OS.
Galaxy s5,s7 phones. s7 is a brilliant phone.

Id much rather have well made, healthy products which have to compete with other devices to get your dollars, This drives innovation above and beyond the apple mantra of "tell the people what they want".
Apple have a closed environment where they provide the hardware, software etc etc and they charge obscene prices for the privilege. You can keep em, I'm never going back.

Commence the apple fanboy backlash :P

      • Not a backlash, I just explained my experience. I do agree that the first time we tried to go to an Apple PC we had issues with build quality so we didn't proceed with it; been fine wih products since.

I have killed a large number of windows PCs, they tend to overheat and then meltdown. Everyone's experience is different.

        • yep, i was a massive apple fanboy for a time, being an admin and general helpdesk person on the big apple forums of the day.

and yep, ive had some shocking PC's and windows dramas in my times :D

        • @The Monk: Live by the philosophy - back up early, back up often.

I do have a bone to pick wih itunes as it can get problematic if you kill your hard drive as itunes won't let you offload from the device.

  • Voda ($40) sim plan plus phone package seems suck this time. They did not pass any discount promo at all (6G data only)
It is better get the $40 sim plan only with 12G data and get the phone outright (save $240 directly on 24months contract) or
Get TPG SIM with same data plus 6 months discounted price and buy the phone outright (save even more).
Shame on Voda make a failure promo for new phone!
I believe this becoz other big player also did not make any better then Voda at the moment.

  • -1

It was a hard call, note8 (or s8/s8+) or the Apple 8/X… the maths was easy, the note8 was the best bag4buck, specs and value on a plan and thanks to OZB Ive got one winging its way to me from Telstra/Amway. $99.20 inc handset + 60gb plus international roaming and 2gb. Whats not to like and in 12 months I can recontact with a new phone for a one off $149…

    • +1

Or sell the phone for more than the contract payout and profit instead of coughing up more money.

  • Where did you get the optus pricing from?

    • Twitter

      • thanks found it on whirlpool

  • Full Telstra pricing should be available at 5:01PM AEST. Had a talk with their rep.

    • I was told 4PM, so now I am not sure I believe them. She was really sure too…

    • Won't be surprised if there will be another line just to find out the price… Does it really matter how much it costs? Seems to me that iPhone users won't consider anything else and will just about pay anything for the product because "they like it" or "it's an iPhone".

I really don't understand this iPhone hype anymore.

  • Grabbed one from Apple. 3/11 delivery!
I dont even know if i want.

    • nice. I ordered from Vodafone. That was a nightmare. Site crashing right when I clicked confirm order so I spent 20 minutes trying to preorder again and again. Turns out that first preorder worked! 1~3 weeks. Hope it doesnt get delayed

      • Congrats, Bit of a timeframe though. Hope for your sake its on the earlier side.
        What colour?

        • Silver 64gb. Has always been a fan of white apple products.

        • @EnterTheShiftKey: Good choice, I was tempted with the silver but went with the grey.
          Is yours delivery or pickup?

    • Even if you don't want it, it's eBay and Gumtree are being flooded with 20-30% premium on the phone.

  • +1

Preordered in store at Telstra. $149 per month for lease, assure insurance and 60GB a month plus 2GB a month Roaming per month. $20 discount for the plan as standard offer and $10 a month discount for porting over from Vodafone.

With this plan you can pay $190 in September next year and give your phone to get a new plan.

  • I'm so bloody curious whether AppleCare+ is worth now. Screen repair is >$400!!! But AppleCare is 299 for the X, and $45 per incident. So if it ever gets broken it seems to be worth. Now the gamble is whether I'll keep it safe for 2 years…

    • More than just screen damage can happen. What’s the cost of a replacement?

      • Screen Damage A$ 418.95
        Other Damage A$ 818.95

or $45 and $149 under applecare, which is $299 for the iPX

    • +1

Amex has smartphone screen insurance that comes with the Essentials (no annual fee) and Explorer cards if you use your amex to pay for the phone outright or the monthly contract fee. Excess is 10% and covers up to $500.

So $41.89 per replacement if the screen repair is $418.95.

I won't be getting Apple care as my main concern is screen replacement and my amex explorer card covers this.

      • thanks for sharing that info
