Padlocks for Suitcase and Backpack

Hey guys/girls/non-binaries,

Does anyone have any recommendations for travel padlocks to use on a suitcase and/or backpacks?

I know there are obvious flaws to combination locks (and most padlocks in general) but if you have any experience with good or bad ones it'd be great to get some info on what brands are good and what I should be looking for.

Thanks!

One with a tsa lock or they will cut it

    • Good point, any brand suggestions?

They are more of a visual deterrent,
The really cheap ones will break in your hand,
I wouldn’t spend too much money as it’s easy enough to split open the zipper anyway.

        • Thanks Stewardo!

Visually deterring is kind of my speciality.

        • I had a $1 combination lock fail to open whilst in a remote location, no access to any kind of useful tool. Had to use a large rock to break it open.. it was surprisingly difficult !

  • Why, considering buying headphones? Hear they make great wedding presents

      Yes… I hear this too.

What a BS excuse, 'my phone is locked and the pictures are in WhatsApp.' It's WhatsApp and you authenticate using your phone number, so you could put your sim in a new phone and there wouldn't be any issues.

      • WhatsApp doesn't store any content. So unless you backup your WhatsApp data regularly to google drive or something, reconnecting to an existing WhatsApp account won't get your data back

  • There is no such thing as non-binary.

  • dont bother with locks, just get some coloured or numbered cable ties.

TSA locks are pointless, if you cant tell someone has been in your bag because of a TSA lock, then you've just made the lock redundant.

    • A combination of the 2, cable ties and a TSA lock?
That way I'd know if the bag was opened, and still have a lock on there.

Knowing my luck, they'd just cut both of them to be annoying.

      • why bother with the lock? It's pointless. Might as well just attach the key to the lock.

If the point is to know if someone has opened your bag, either using locks without a TSA key and have it cut, or numbered cable ties/security tape is the only way

  • I bought a cheap $2 small keyed padlock on the last trip, mainly as a deterrent for the bag.

  • I use large nappy pins to hold zips together. May as well keep bag together and make it easy for anyone to get into. If there is a will there will be a way!
Do not think it will pass muster in US. Never carry anything valuable in checked luggage.
